Aborting Variable Servicing

Featured Replies

After purchasing my vrs 6 months ago the service indicator has come on, I have only covered 4900 miles since picking it up and it is on variable servicing. After contacting the dealer I bought it from ( Non Skoda ) they inform me that they serviced it with their ' normal ' oil as they did not know it was on variable servicing! They also inform me that they did not reset the service indicator as it was not on. I have three questions:-

1, If I just reset the service indicator myself and change the oil and filter myself will this negate the variable servicing or do I have to go to a dealer to sort this?

2, What oil do you guys use as I was thinking along the lines of Mobil 1?

3, What is the difference between the variable oil the dealers use and regular interval oil?

Sorry for all the questions but I just dont feel in control with variable servicing!!!

Thanks in advance

Tom:confused:

Is the vehicle in warranty?

Its not set for variable, if you want it to be you would have to fill with the correct spec oil and reset the service indiactor (requires VAG COM).

If you just want to keep it on fixed then replace the oil with a good quality 10w40 semi synth (Quantum Synta is good value from any VAG dealer), requires around 4.5 litres.

We use regular and variable oil, depends on what service scheme the car is on, variable oil is of a higher grade to last the longer distance.

Changed oil today on my 2000 TDi 110 using VAG filter and oil (Quantum Synta VW 505.00 approved) total

The car is under warranty, however it is a third party warranty as the car is 3.5 years old, according to the front of my service book it is on variable servicing, that is my problem.

The warranty stipulates a service every 9k miles but the service lindicator is on 4100 miles early, I put this down to the oil used by the dealer at the last service!

Being a bit ignorant here but I dont know how variable servicing works? Is it possible that it needs servicing after 4900 miles? It has not been driven hard, however, I did not buy it to bimble about so it has been used 'as it should' shall we say!;)

Minimum mileage on variable is 9800 miles.

The reason the light has come on early is they havent reset it.

Your car isnt on variable.

You can reset the service indicator yourself using the procedure on page 64 of the Owner's Manual, in which case the car will be on fixed service intervals. But it needs a service before you do that for the display to have any meaning. Two questions. Won't you need to have the car serviced by a VAT-registered garage so that you have the proof of service needed to maintain the warranty? And has the car only covered 4900 miles since the last recorded service?

So it doesnt actually need a service anyhow.

That is what I am trying to confirm. If the warranty provider requires the car to be serviced at fixed mileage intervals, I wonder if there is also a time limit stipulated, ie 12 months, so that servicing stays within the manufacturer's service schedule.

I have owned the vehicle for 5 months and the warranty stipulates 12 months or 9k miles as service intervals.

It was serviced just before I picked it up supposedly but I am a touch sceptical. The idea was to do a simple oil and filter myself and then in 6 months (ie 12 months from previous stamped up service) have it serviced by a vat registered garage to stick with the warranty. Hope this sounds logical, I dont function when on night shifts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:o

All is now clear. :) I would check the colour of the oil on the dipstick to try and gauge if it has been changed recently before going ahead with an oil change.
