In the next revision I will change the oil brakes. Someone recommend the Ferodo 5.1?

And about quantity, one liter will be enough?

I think you mix up two things here. Brake pads (Ferodo DS2500) and Brake fluid (Castrol Super RS 4.1).

Judging by your last statement you want the brake fluid. And IIRC, they come in 500ml bottles, so you'd need two (it is slightly less than 1L).

I was told that if you go from dot4 brake fluid on to dot5.1 you have to flush the system.

As this is 2 totally differnt types of fluid?

I think that a good quality dot4 brake fluid is usually ok and just replace it every 2 years as stated in the service manual

Go to super dot 4.1 seems the recomendation as dot 4.1 isn't far behind 5.1 when dry and is much better when wet, so you won't need to change it every 5 minutes.

Yeah Sarah, you've got that right. Dot 4.1 is a conventional mineral fluid (but higher boiling point than numerically lower specs like dot 3 or dot 4). Dot 5 and 5.1 are silicone based, so you need to flush the system to get the mineral fluid out, and then hope you don't get a water lock (like an air lock but harder to bleed out) in the system.

Dot 5's not worth considering except on dedicated race or rally cars.

The fluid capacity of the brake system is 0.6L.

I use Dot 5.1.

And sorry to disagree but 5.1 is NON silicone based.

DOT 5.1 is Glycol based, the same that Dot 3 and 4. So you can switch between 3, 4 and 5.1 with no problem. You can even mix them up.

As far as i'm aware, the above is correct with dot 5 being the silicone fluid and dot 5.1 being interchangeable with 3 and 4.

I was told different.

So look in to it before you do it , that would be my advice

I want to know if someone has tried?

And the full capacity off the system brake (0,6 or 1.5 l)?

Ok guys; I was told by a usually reputable source that dot 5.x was a standard for silicone fliuds.

DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are compatible AFAIK.

I use DOT 5.1 in my mountain bikes. It resists heat, but it needs frequent (well, yearly!) flushing through as it seems to absorb moisture quite quickly.

Personally I would still go with super dot 4.1 as it performs much better when damp and only marginally worse when wet

As mentioned DOT 3,4 and 5.1 are all the same typre of fluid and can be mixed, however you will alter the spec of the fluid by doing so.

DOT 5 is silicone based and quite different, usually kinda pink in colour aswell.

Super DOT 4 seems to be a good compromise, IIRC DOT 5.1 attracts moisture quicker.

Either way just a damn good fluid change with factory DOT 4 fluid will make a vast difference if the fluid is getting old.

Since DOT 4 fluids were developed, it was recognized that borate ester based fluids offered the potential for boiling points beyond the 446F requirement, thus came the Super DOT 4 fluids - some covered by the DOT 5.1 designation - which exhibit a minimum dry boiling point of 500F (same as silicone, but different chemistry).

Standard No. 116: Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids

S5.1.14 Fluid color. Brake fluid and hydraulic system mineral oil shall be of the color indicated:

DO3, DO4, and DO5.1 non SBBF colorless to amber.

DO5 SBBF purple.

S5.2.2 Certification, marking, and labeling.

S5.2.2.1 Each manufacturer of a DOT grade brake fluid shall furnish to each packager, distributor, or dealer to whom he/she delivers brake fluid, the following information:

( The grade (DO3, DO4, DO5) of the brake fluid. If DO5 grade brake fluid, it shall be further distinguished as "DO5 SILICONE BASE" or "DO5.1 NON SILICONE BASE."

(e) Certification that the brake fluid conforms to DO5 SILICONE BASE, or DO5.1 NON SILICONE BASE as applicable.
