Biggest roof rack or basket for MK3 estate?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Currently use a 470l roof box for camping trips.

Looking at the options of using a roof basket or rack with a roof bag to give us more room instead of paying £800+ for a large Thule roof box.

Anyone use a roof rack or basket on a MK3 estate? How big can you go?

Currently can only find baskets this size but want something bigger 64" x 39" x 6

Thanks

Well I've just bought a 540L soft roof box (not a bag) from Halfords. It's big (70mm wide, I don't have the length to hand as it's not on Halfords Web site) but fits on both by Fabia II Combi and on my Superb III hatch, so will be absolutely fine on a Superb III Estate.

It comes with both T-bolt fittings (not mentioned on the web site) and hook-style U-bolts. The latter is good if you are only fitting the box short-term (and being a hook rather than a full U-Bolt, they don't crush your bars.

The fasteners inside the box are geared so you can't overtighten.

Thanks for the reply. But I want to know what size roof baskets / racks people have.

Plan then to put a 21 cubic feet roof bag on the basket.

Hi thanks for the reply. I'm after a roof rack / basket like this.

You might just have to just chance it. Don’t think many people use things like that on cars any more, in this day and age of roof boxes and hard-base roof bags that can sit directly on bars.

That is correct... I fear baskets are not in hot demand.

I've fitted a Thule Atlantis 900 which is 235x94x47 on 120cm bars.

On the most rearward position, thus allowing the rear cargo door to its full opening, the box overhangs the windshield by a good 20cm, which adds noise.

Ideally, I would not use overhang so the rack you have listed seems more than adequate, also in width....I would not go for more than 200x100cm.

Consider the bars this connects to, though, they will add height overall and noise.

Finally, and maybe unneccesary if you know your hauling, invest some pounds in a good set of straps, ideally the ones with a ratchet and hook, so make sure you thighten well everything you put there....
