Looking at a Roofbox for our Superb Estate

Featured Replies

Hi All,

After a search on the forum and only turning up REALLY old threads, I thought I'd start a new one, as things may have moved on some since then.

We're looking for a roof box to go on our MK3 Superb Estate - I'm not looking to spend a fortune, as we don't go away loads, but the extra space would be appreciated, especially when SWMBOs electric wheelchair ends up in the boot of the car sometimes.

Needing a decent (read: quality but relatively inexpensive) Roof Bars & Accompanying Roof Box

Looking in the usual Places (Halfords and the like) nothing thats within the price range (upto maybe £350-£400 max)

Any advice or opinions welcome :)

We use a Kamei Corvara 390 Duolift. Had it for several years now, it's very durable, very spacious, openable from either side, and never let a drop of water in even at motorway speeds in prolonged heavy rain.

Fitted on Thule Aerobars, I chose slightly wider bars than specified - partly because they will also fit my Yeti, and partly so I can fit a bike carrier alongside the roofbox.

I bought a FARAD F3 680 litre just recently. Sub £350 from Amazon and delivered directly from Italy.

Really good quality and opens both sides, thus safer for taking abroad.

I've been loading it today for a weekend family festival and so far it's swallowed with ease:-

x4 camping chairs

x2 windbreaks

x2 sleep mats

x2 airbeds

x4 sleeping bags

x1 camping table

x2 picinic blankets

x1 camping loo

Plenty of space to spare for pillows and other stuff come tomorrow morning!!

If you're looking to do this on a budget...

There are over 500 used roof boxes on eBay at the moment so finding one to suit shouldn't be so hard. By way of example, the big Exodus (Halfords - made by Thule) 580 typically sell for £200-£250 (currently £335 new, down from £419)

If you're not fussed about looks, consider used again for the bars and look for any thule bar (118cm+) and 775 foot pack. I reused the Thule Aerobar from my Mk1 Octavia estate, then got the foot pack from Evans cycles (using £50 of Tesco clubcard vouchers). Again, looking at eBay used Thule bars with the correct foot pack seem to be selling for between £50 and £80.

With a little bit of time spent you should be able to get a decent big box and bars for under £300 all in.

Thanks all for the replies.

Halfords have a deal on their Exodus 470L box and Bars set, including fitting, for £389

I might do an ebay trawl (ebay isn't my favourite place :) )

Just a quick update on this.

We decided (after much faffing around) to go with the Halfords Deal @ £389.  However we dropped on, as they had 10% off everything online, yesterday (Tues 17th/July) so we got it for £350.10p!

Also when booking the guy at our (not local - because the Doncaster Store were useless!) store - Cortonwood in Barnsley - gave us the lock mechanisms for the roof bars, which are an additional extra (£24 usually) for nowt due to the lack of help the Doncaster staff were.

Get the box/bars fitted on Saturday so I will post a picture once I get back - I went for Aluminium Aero Bars, and the box is Black so it should go well with the Car.

Ok so the roof box has been fitted... although I’ve removed it for now as the car needs a properly good wash (and it’s hard to do with the box on.

Took about half an hour with the dude showing me how it fitted etc

Doesn’t fit quite as much in as we initially hoped but enough for our camping trips. And wind noise @80 mph is noticeable but not overly intrusive considering the gap between the box and the roof where air rushes through. It did drop my mpg by more than when I tow the trailer though! I usually get around 60mpg @ 70mph on motorway (maxi dot) but with the box on it was indicating 45mpg...
