Warning light on dash - number plate light not on

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Asking on behalf of my sister who has a mk3 Fabia.

Approx 3 years ago a warning light came on dash to indicate the rear plate bulb was out. She replaced the bulb but it's didn't work and the dash light stayed on. Took it to dealer who replaced some kind of module at the rear. Some weeks later the same thing occurred, Skoda said she would have to pay for a replacement module again (I wouldn't have put up with that tbh).

3 years down the line, my sister is paying a few hundred quid a pop to replace this "module thing" to get the car through it's mot just for the thing the stop working within a few weeks.

I've only just found out about this and was like wtf.

Has anyone had similar experiences who might be able to suggest a solution.

Sorry if I'm vague, but obviously I'm the middle man 🙄

Appreciate any advice. Thanks 👍👍

See my reply on this thread. Worth a quick check.

PS - not sure what "module" is being referred to at the rear of the car that the garage might have changed. The number plate light wire (RED and GREY in colour) comes off the "Onboard supply control unit" (J519) which is at the front of the car, and runs all the way into the tailgate - and then splits into two to feed the two number plate light units.

Yorkshiremidge thanks so much. I'm not sure about the module either, but it makes total sense what you're saying. She has is booked in with an auto electrician this week, so have suggested she show them your post.

Really appreciate your input, it might just be the solution. 👍🤞

@saint1d You're welcome. Even if the issue has been intermittent, it's still a possible cable break - as the conductors can break internally within the insulation, and make contact again depending on cable position.

I dunno if you have looked at the other post in the last hour or so but the OP on that one has just found his broken RED/GREY wire in the tailgate grommet as I suspected he would, and a second wire that is likely his heated screen - and the rest of his loom looks just as 💩 as mine does! So just warn your sister that if she does have the same issue, the auto electrician will probably recommend doing a full repair on the loom as I will be doing on ours.
