CarPlay Steering Wheel Control (Skip tracks) Not Working Until Unplug/Replug

Hi all

As the title, I find that when using Apple CarPlay (wired, at least, as I don't like the lag with wireless) when I first turn the car on and plug my phone in CarPlay works but the skip forward/back buttons don't work.

However, when I unplug the phone and plug it back in it will work.

Have tried updating both the phone and (I think) the car.

Any ideas?
