Repeat injector issues

Featured Replies

Hi! I have a 1.6TDI with just over 200,000k and for the second time in 2 years I've had issues with injectors with the typical rattly noise and misfires when starting from cold. I had 4 reconditioned injectors fitted in November 2023, and I've just had 3 injectors cleaned and 1 reconditioned injector fitted this month (reconditioned came in much cheaper than new). The garage I went to said there was no need to flush the fuel system, but did recommend using the premium fuel options going forward and named a certain chain of filling stations to avoid.
I have a few questions:
1. I know the advice here is generally to avoid, but in my case should I be using any fuel additives?
2. Should I swap the fuel filter more regularly than indicated?
3. Any other advice? Things I should do to avoid this happening again?

Thanks.

I am thinking that you should probably be trying to avoid reconditioned injectors. They are bad news IMHO. I've seen the reconditioning process being as little a quick clean - without even a modicum of testing the injection pulse and fuel delivery amount. Its very hit and miss. Try getting yourself some good Bosch injectors - set of 4 (including the special monitoring injector on cylinder no 3). Running on Super Diesel is a good thing, although I personally use standard diesel with a cetane booster and cleaner (https://www.hydra-int.com/DPB000K.html) for the injectors (cheaper and IMHO better mpg). Its a controversial option, but it works for me.

Other things: make sure your fuel filter is clean and replaced every 20k miles too as this can be a source of dirt and performance related issues (getting blocked)
