Ignition on but still have "This function is only available with ignition on"

Featured Replies

Hi all. After removing the info centre to diagnose a noisy heater flap the system does not seem to recognise I have the ignition on with or without engine running. The left hand buttons on the steering wheel do not work. The head unit screen comes alive if I switch it on but then it does not switch off when ignition is turned off. The radio works and I can navigate the meus on the screen but if I select anything it states "This function is only available with ignition on". Tried soft reset and disconnected the battery but still the same. Its almost as though it does not "see" the ignition power. Checked the only 2 fuses which manual states are info centre. Disconnected / reconnected plugs on the back and still the same.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Simon

The infotainment uses data on the Infotainment CAN bus to tell it that the ignition is on, sounds like the connectors on the rear of the main infotainment unit (usually in the glove box) are not properly seated.

Thanks Dave I should have guessed that ref canBus rather than dedicated ignition source. I have checked the plug on the back and all the wires look to be engaged. Do you know which wire is the canbus feed. I can then concentrate on that wire or that plug in the larger quad lock

Thanks

Simon

The CAN bus is a twisted pair not a single wire so it should be easy to spot.

The infotainment system has multiple CAN buses. It's also no longer directly twisted by the Connector With the ignition, a wake-up signal is sent every 100ms. This lets the control units know, "Now it's time to start."

The car has multiple CAN buses, but only one of them is the infotainment CAN - others are Powertrain CAN, Comfort CAN, etc.

The J794 is directly connected to several CAN strands. The CAN structure is star-shaped, and all converge at the gateway. The wake-up signal has nothing specific to do with the Infotainment CAN.

Thanks Dave for the wire info. Concentrating on the orange black / brown Difficult tell if it’s black or brown I wiggled those in the quad connection and then tracked the twisted wires back into the dash and found a swagged junction with more orange wires and on the other side a red and black. The great news is everything is now working as it should

Cheers

Simon
