Power Steering HP Hose Corroded

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a Fabia Mk2 and the power Steering went the other day. I took it to a local garage who quoted me upwards of £600 to replace the HP hose and the return hose. The HP hose is ruptured and the return is corroded.

Im trying to source the correct parts to maybe attempt the repair myself as we only purchased the car 2 months ago for £1,200 and this surprise cost before Xmas isn't ideal.

If anyone can help me find the correct hose or part numbers that would be great or if anyone has any support they can share with regards to sourcing and changing the hoses that would be fantastic.

I saw on some other posts that sharing the VIN would help narrow down the parts required, please see below.

VIN: TMBAA25J383204266

Thank you in advanced for any support given.

"Expansion hose" for that VIN was 6R2 423 893, but superseded by 6R2 423 893E (RRP currently £295 + VAT)

"Return hose " was 6R2 423 891D, now superseded by 6R2 423 891E (£89.50 + VAT)

So that's £460-ish for parts alone, including VAT, for both genuine.

I guess you'll try to find better condition secondhand?

I wouldn't bother changing the return hose until it gives trouble, to be honest.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the quick response!

Wowzers, that is an expensive hose, would you by chance know if there are any aftermarket parts available or where I could look/source from other than eBay? The car will only do around 2k miles per year maybe 3k so I'm not too worried about a cheaper hose not lasting as long because the likelihood is we will get a new car before it failed (hopefully more than 2 years).

I am well and truly in the "cheap and cheerful" camp at the moment. Maybe if it had gone after owning the car for a year, I'd go for the genuine but I'm not in a position to be forking out hundreds at the moment.

Thanks again for the speedy response :)

No idea about aftermarket, sorry. Autodoc can be a useful research tool in that respect.

Find your nearest scrapyard.

Thought I would try my luck, appreciate the support.

Final question if you don't mind, are there any images of the hose you mentioned (6R2 423 893E) as I'm seeing multiple hoses (non - genuine) for around £120 - £170 but I don't know what "my" hose looks like so I'm clicking everything trying to find something that references my vehicle and/or the part number listed above.

I doubt this image will help much for two reasons; it'll depict a LHD system, so you'd have to mentally mirror the rack to get an idea, and the hose images won't match RHD reality, too short for a start, I'd think.

These diagrams tend to be a bit generic too, so even a LHD hose of the respective part number (will start 6R1 instead of 6R2, N.B.) may not resemble the sketch exactly.

Most aftermarket stuff is likely to be made for the majority LHD market, and so will match 6R1 parts, not 6R2.

Thanks Pete,

You've given me the support I needed and have been very helpful. Have a great day 👍.

Please do report back with anything that might assist others in future, especially if you find an aftermarket supplier of correct, RHD parts.

I suspect a lot of mk1 owners are in the even worse position of not even genuine replacements being available any more.

Take the hose off and see if a hydraulic hose company can make you one up. I had similar probs with an old Volvo 940 and my local hydraulic hose company made me one for around £60. That was a few years ago so prices will be higher.

Hi guys,

Just to update where I am with this. I've searched and searched but have been unable to find the correct hose. I have a friend who is a mechanic who will take a look and see if he can source a new aftermarket hose. If he finds one, I will post here for others in future 👌.
