DSG problem?

Featured Replies

I know others have reported similar incidents, but thought I'd share my experience with a DSG box in a 1.9 TDI Elegance.

I was caught in traffic on the boulevard peripherique round Paris at the beginning of July -- makes note to remember never, ever, to trust the satellite navigation system, or to learn how to get it to ignore the peripherique -- and was doing stop/start motoring for about 2 hours in hot weather.

At one point, the DSG display on the dash started flashing (all gear indicators together) and the car would not change gear -- it stuck in first or second -- although it would shift into neutral and reverse. Putting it into manual mode didn't change things.

I managed to pull over onto the hard shoulder and switch the engine off, then waited about 10 seconds and started it again. No more problems for the rest of the trip. Temperature guage showed normal (90 degrees) and the engine oil level was OK, and there was no low oil indicator light showing on the dash either.

In other threads, people have reported noises, clunks, etc., and the fact that the car wouldn't move any more. I didn't have any of that, just the flashing lights.

I'm assuming that something, somewhere, overheated and switching the engine off then back on again rebooted whatever it was.

Anyone else had this?

The car is going in for a service next week, so I'll ask them to take a look anyway.

I've not had any problems myself, but the owners manual does refer to warning lights if you're in traffic or on hills using the creep facility a lot.

It sounds like the clutches overheated, presumably because of the constant stop/start in heavy traffic.

The handbook doesn't mention this kind of situation, only warning of trying to hold the car on a hill with the throttle.

The handbook says:

"an overheating of the clutches can be detected by the flashing of the selector level indicator and the "jerk" of the clutches, finally the clutches are opened. The power transmission from the engine to the front wheels is interrupted and as a result of this the vehicle can no longer be driven. If the clutch opens automatically, depress th brake pedal, wait a few seconds and only then continue driving"

So it looks like you did the right thing by stopping and letting the clutches cool down a bit.

Thanks prof, thanks stumpy,

what surprised me was that I could still go from neutral to first gear and back again, without jerks, and that I could still drive the car. In fact, I first noticed the problem when the rev counter got close to 5 thou and the gear hadn't shifted -- the car was a bit noisier than usual

Hi,

I guess you know more than I do on cars so hoping you may be able to help.

My 05 Automatic Petrol Octavia has started showing all the gears P R N D S and gear 1 on the dashboard this winter, just after I start off. The gears seem to engage ok for now.

Apart from this previously had p0301 come couple of times. Which was cleared by my local garage. Haven't got the coil pack changed yet.

Can you please suggest any things I should get checked/changed to get this resolved. Obviously want to keep the cost to the minimum.

Thanks for your help in advance.

MK

Its called the "flash of death" and means its the start of the mechnotronic failure. This needs replacing at a 4 figure cost.

As said, the flashing PRNDS is a symptom of impending Mechatronic Unit failure on the DSG. These transmissions are proving unreliable. Typically the 'odd' or 'even' gear actuator will start to fail next - so you get hard downchange from 3-1 (e.g. if 'even' actuator plays up) and/or snatchy gearchange.

They are all sourced from the same factory in Germany. A new MU must be manufactured specific to the car's VIN. Apparently there are delays at the moment due to the large number of failures and consequent shortage of parts (according to a friend of mine who works for a VW dealer, at least).

It is likely to be a very costly repair.

Octiowner - you have caused some confusion by using an old thread titled "DSG Problem"

Your car is an 05 PETROL Octavia and therefore will not have a DSG box but the older style conventional automatic. In 2005 only diesel Octavias had the DSG box.

Ah, yes, sorry. Ignore my reply. I didn't spot that this is going to be conventional auto.

Best post the problem in a new thread with different title.

The good news that, whilst not cheap, the cost of repair is likely to be a lot less than with a DSG.

Thanks everyone for your comments. As you can see I know little about cars.

Can someone please point me to what I should do.

Looking at the expensive DSG repair - I hope that this one is not a DSG gearbox. Although, I still think the gearbox is a DSG box. It has 6 gears when I try to run manually and Tiptronic kind of functionality.

Also how do I find someone local with a Vagcom before I take it to the Dealer.

As mentioned above, Skoda did not make ANY petrol DSG's in 2005. They came out I believe with the FL model in 2009.

Therefore you have a traditional automatic with a torque converter, and tiptronic.

There is a VAG Com area on the forum front page

Thanks Mike,

You guys are very good.

Please can I request you to send me the hyperlink to the vag com search page.

Thanks
