Odometer mileage has gone down since last year!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm having my car serviced and MOTed in the UK. I've just had a call to say that something odd has come up: the mileage was ~35k last year, and it's reading ~31k now. This is the same place I always use. The mechanic has no option but to write down what the number is, and will include a letter to say that his only explanation is an input error last year.

I would expect it to be higher than 35k miles, so I'm doubting that the new reading is correct.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this on a 2021 Skoda Octavia Mk4 L? I did have the infotainment unit upgraded (following the guidance in these forums for the audio issue), but I assume there is absolutely no connection between the infotainment system and the odometer right?

Thanks,

Richard

What is the actual mileage now?

@RichardOctavia1 So you have never noticed that the mileage was reduced. I have had MOT,s where the incorrect mileage was logged. How many miles a week or month do you actually do, just to give an idea how many since the last MOT / Service? Was the Service Indicator reset last year?

I've just been doing some digging and ringing places that the car had been at.

August 2022: 12986 (Purchased)

November 2024: 14431 (Service)

** Bought second car, expect mileage to significantly reduce, maybe expect 3k per year max as I WFH, and we've had two kids since having the car
June 2024: 21165 (Service)

December 2024: 35967 (MOT)

October 2025: 30858 (Service)

November 2025: 30977 (I noted it for car insurance)

December 2025: 31550 (MOT)

Looking at the history, I think it points at the December 2024 number being input wrong by the garage. At least, more than some glitch with the car... How frustrating as I guess this could impact future sale.

EDIT: 35967 doesn't make sense though, 30967 would still be higher than almost a year later. Huh. Maybe it was 25967...

Anyway, I'm assuming this isn't some kind of "known issue" with the car and just something I need to figure out. Hopefully not too much trouble in the future (it's not like huge miles on it regardless). Unless garages literally won't take it or something.

Not a huge mileage off it!. I lost 12,500 miles from a Corsa Electric when an Over the Air update was done, or the car did a factory reset at 25,000 miles. Someone owns that EV now that has done more miles than they think it had, thought is was worth when buying it. I was not messing about with the Dealership or Vauxhall because the car was leased and often locked me out, probably OTA updates or foreign lorries CB's wavebands caused it.

That would fit best with the rest of the mileages shown.
