?Faulty oil level sensor 1.9 tdi pd

Featured Replies

Hi there everyone

One of my rare posts as this car seems to be going on forever.....

I have a 2005 Octavia 1.9tdi pd combi (1Z5)

The oil level sensor seems to have developed a fault in that when I start the car with the engine cold it lights the warning lamp and beeps at me. (I have checked the oil level and it is fine).

However, when the engine is warmed up the fault disappears.

From what I can gather these sensors seem to be a reasonbly common failure item.

The car has only done 300,000 miles and the sensor will definitely be the original item.

My presumption is that the sensor has gone faulty and/or possible crusties at the connector. The normal working temperature seems to be the cure for the error.

Does anyone know if this is deffo the sensor. ie. Is this how they usually fail? I don't suppose it might be cured by taking it out and cleaning it or spraying it with carb cleaner would help.

The replacement item doesn't seem too expensive (except from the main dealer, of course) so if the wiring is good then I'll just swap the sensor for a new one

Any comments from any one gratefully accepted

Thanks all

Tom

I take it its an orange/yellow warning light not red? If its red its oil pressure. I would change sensor/check wiring etc and see if it cures it. Chances are it may be the original so at 300k its not owing anybody anything.

The warning light is red but from what you're saying it looks like the sensor has gone faulty. The engine is in really good condition so i don't think it's oil pressure but at 300K it could be anything. The part is deffo the original I've had the car since 2008

Thx v much for your post

Red light is usually/always oil pressure, not level.

Different sensor.

False alarm.............this is a good one. I've just rechecked the meaning of the warning lights..........It's the COOLANT level light thats on NOT the oil level sensor........what a stupid boy!!!

I've just checked and the coolant level was slightly low......hence after topping it up, the COOLANT level warning light doesn't comes on anymore!! Loooool, who would believe it!!!

I think I'll put this down to 'having a senior moment'. It can't be my fault because the wife tells me that men never make mistakes........hahaha

So, once again thanks Breezy Pete and Alasdair for your help

All the best everyone

Tom

Glad it was that simple. Red oil light is never good. I had similar problems and yes I to thought it was oil leel. warning symbol does look like a dipstick in our defense. Rushed into my local garage panicking and they pointed out it was coolant but level was fine so they said probably the probes in tank. If it happens again it could be the probes in the coolant tank that need cleaned. I gave mine a scrape with a long screwdriver and it hasnt happend again.

As an old school kinda guy, and of the thinking that a car is a mechanical device to get from A to B whilst enjoying the fact you've looked after and serviced said car and not just bought(rented?) a computer on wheels to keep up with the neighbours ......

You gotta love an old diesel !!

👍

Glad it was just a senior glitch 😉
