Towbar electric problem

Featured Replies

Hi all, I’ve had our Skoda Octavia estate for 6 years now and it’s one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. It’s a 2 litre diesel and is fitted with a westfalia towbar and electrics. I needed to bring our caravan home last year, but when connected up, the electrics wouldn’t operate the lights on my van. Hitched up to another vehicle and they worked fine. I won’t bore you with how I got the van home, but on checking out why the car’s electrics wouldn’t operate I found that if I put the 7 pin adapter into the 13 pin socket, and connected an LED light board that I have, it all worked, but when the van is plugged into the 13 pin, once again not a thing lights up. Has anyone else ever had this problem? I’ve had the car checked by a towbar specialist and he thinks there must be a failed module that is behind one of the panels in the boot. I can’t take it back to where it was fitted originally, as the company no longer exists. Wiring loom was Westfalia product. Any help welcomed.

sounds suspiciously like a possible loose connection or corrosion in the plug to the caravan, had this issue a couple of times over 3 decades of towing. 🤔
