Rear Drum clean

Featured Replies

Hi All

Currently my 2023 Fabia is in for 3 year service and MOT at local Skoda dealer

Part of the free safety check has flagged in red urgent rear drum clean due at a cost of £174 !

Car has only driven 20k miles and brakes works fine , including handbrake

Is this a con ? or needs doing

Thanks Steve

Not yet I'm guessing they service car then MOT ?

I have no idea how they can judge that the drums need cleaning, without removing them to look inside. They will not have done this, unless you specifically asked them to, I would think.

If they had looked, it's only 5 minutes more work to clean them out while they're in there!

So I would recommend ignoring this dubious suggestion and letting the MOT decide if it's really required.

Passed MOT no advisories

Mentioned to Skoda customer service that I had declined the rear drum clean as there was no way they would know without moving wheels which they hadn't ....

Cheers Steve

If you are paying for the Extended Scope as well as the Oil & Inspection service remind the Service Desk person that Supposedly they are Removing the Wheels anyway, and removing the rear drums when wheels off does not take over 1 hours labour. Even cleaning out the brakes once drums off does not take 1 hours. As FABIA Servicing was for Mk1 & 2 the Minor and Major Service used the say Check rear brakes. This was when many FABIA had drums and they never removed the rear wheels. ......................... Extended Scope is first & 3 Years then each 2 years if on fixed servicing regime.

Cant see it taking very long to check rear drums especially if handbrake works. Car on lift then 5 bolts then drum removed and if dirty a good spray of brake cleaner quick check of shoe/drum thickness (drum thickness check not needed at 20k) then drum on plus 5 bolts and back on the road x2. Reckon its another one of those multi service items that isnt really required. Suppose they have to make their money somewhere to cover the cost of their plush showroom.
