Upgrading from MIB1 to MIB2 on skoda octavia MK3

Featured Replies

Hello!

I have owned a skoda octavia mk3 from 2015 for the last 2 years and all i can say is that this car is amazing. The navigation i bought it with after some research is a MIB1. I want to upgrade to a MIB2 for the bigger screen and also for waze mainly so i can stop using my phone every time when driving somewhere.

System information
Device part number 5E0035864A
Hardware: 041
Software: 0435

I have found an columbus screen at around 100 euros with the part number 5E0919606
Now the only thing i need to figure out further is what kind of glovebox unit i need for this to work properly.

Any ideeas on what piece of hardware should i get to make this work properly? Can it be done without changing the glovebox unit and getting an adapter or an MMI to make this work?

Hey there

I had the same idea a couple of months ago. You will need a new glovebox unit with the code 5Q0035874A (150€~). The new unit will need to get component protection removed (around 60€ in Estonia), Smartlink activated (for Android Auto or Carplay, costs upwards of 200€ I’ve heard) and some further coding to enable features. Also the USB needs to get replaced to use Smartlink, product code 5Q0035726E (40€~). USB will also need a change in the code.

My problem was that I have Canton in my car. That means the Canton amplifier also needed to be replaced for a MIB2 one. I did not know that and bought the parts listed above plus a screen (5E0919605M). Went to a shop to get component protection removed and they could not get the speakers to work. So I gave up and bought a new glovebox unit which originally was in my car. Just yesterday I got it to work since it did not cross my mind that it needs coding to work with a Canton amplifier.

This thread (https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/462065-head-unit-upgrade/) is very helpful in this topic.

Please ask any questions that you have so you don’t make the same mistakes that I did

That is good to know, thx for the info!
I talked for a bit with the seller of the display and he says that he doesn't know if it is a MIB1 or a MIB2 so all i can do now is wait for the display to arrive and see. If it is a MIB1 (that i already have) and i only upgrade to a bigger screen i will just add an MMI behind and have waze with that. Right now i have a 6.5 inch display and the one i am waiting for is a 8 inch display. Don't think there will be any problems,no? just swap and have fun i guess. Let me know if i am wrong.

The screen you listed is compatible with a MIB2 glovebox unit (5Q0035874A) so it is “MIB2”. But you will need to get the glovebox unit I mentioned before for it to work. As long as you get component protection removed, smartlink activated and some features coded it will work fine. By the way do you have the Canton sound system in your car?

Sorry for the late reply,

I don’t have canton on my car or at least don’t think so as of my speakers not beeing labeled with it.

Do you think i should change the usb port also? I already have a usb port with jack next to it
