200ps Diesel vs 190ps Petrol - Superb mk3 facelift post 2021

Featured Replies

Hi,

Looking to replace my now wearing 2017 superb sel exec 150ps diesel manual which has almost 170k miles on it. I am UK based and am looking at either the 200ps diesel or 190ps petrol options, as I have struggled to find an alternative comparable car to the superb. I am finding that there are more 190ps petrols available than the 200ps diesel available second hand. I would consider a stage 1 for either too. Looking to get one that's post 2021 with around 50k miles and likely run it to around 150k miles (similar to my existing car).

Are there any red flags to say no to either of the options?

Probably would look toward the Sportline trim this time too. Annual mileage is around 20-25k miles.

Traditionally, diesels are for higher miles but the gearing on the DQ381 will be decent for longer journeys.

If you were on the 7-speed DQ381 then no change. If you were on the DQ250 6 speed, it was required to be serviced every 40k miles and the 7 speed is officially every 80k miles but most stick to the 40k service period.

The 190bhp I presume is an EA888 engine which is a decent block. Waterpump issues are a known fault but there are some decent replacements. Not sure on the the remap potential but the turbo only looks to peak around 230/240bhp.

Hi,

My googling suggests the 190ps EA888 is very different internally and externally from the other versions, being focused on efficiency rather than power.

Are all post 2021 using the 7 speed DSG?

Petrol. The 190tsi is efficient enough.

Hello,

I got myself a 200ps tdi at the beginning of this year and so far I don't regret it one bit, but then again I haven't tried the 280 or 190 tsi-s.

It replaced my previous 150ps tsi Octavia which I also loved, but this car had most of the bells and whistles I'd dreamed of and more power than the previous so not going to tempt myself with the tsi-s for quite a while.

In regards to driving, it's my first automatic diesel and to me the throttle response on the regular "D" profile felt a bit sluggish, since I don't like to drive in "Sport" mode all the time like some people suggest.

I got around that by reading the forum and doing a suggested adaptation to change the throttle response profile from "Incremental" to "Direct" and for me at least that improved the feel quite a bit.

I don't know the difference in 0-60 for the 200ps tdi and 190ps tsi but I can say that you'll certainly feel the difference in power from your current 150ps, I certainly did and it hasn't left me wanting, I've had no problems passing other cars even when fully loaded.

When doing research before committing to my car I found a reddit thread when googling, you'll find it with the name "VW EA288 2.0 TDI things to know before buying" and that gave me some good hints on what to check.

Go take both the 200 and 190 for a stroll and who knows, maybe you'll favour one more than the other, making this an easy choice for you )

Best of luck on your car search!
