Driving Licences

Featured Replies

One of our drivers had an accident today and the police

were involved .. while our driver was waiting for the

ambulance ..... the police asked to see her driving licence...

as she did`nt have it with her she was given a caution ....

apparently its an offence not to carry your driving licence

with you ..... that was news to all of us at work........ I

have never in 44 years of driving carried mine .. its kept

safely at home . mind you I have never been asked to produce

mine ( more luck than judgment ) :D

is this a new requirement ???????

not new.

It is the law - and always has been to ny knowledge - as is carrying proof of insurance and MOT.

The 3 things a " producer " will ask for.

Not that ever have mine in the car - unless on the way to a trackday

no, you dont have to carry you're driving licence with you, or mot certificate or proof of insurance, but they can ask you to produce these items at a police station of your choice within 7 days. but they should caution you when telling you this "anything you do may be given in evidence" etc etc. if they dont caution you then dont bother producing your documents.

I only have a photocard license in my wallet. I thought the aim of a producer was to give you 7 days to supply these documents to a police station and be witnessed by an officer/clerk?

I keep my MOT and other car documents at home in a file. They wouldn't last 5 minutes in my car.

Edit: Beaten to it by Mr "non stick" himself. :D

that's how i got this nickname. when i was about 17/18 we used to get up to a lot of stuff, and the police started calling me teflontom because no matter how hard they tried they couldn't make anything stick, and i'd nomally get away with stuff scot-free

They don't have to "caution" you as it is not an offence to not carry your documents with you. It's an offence not to be able to produce evidence of driving licence, insurance and MOT (if applicable) within 7 days of being asked to.

Producing documents is pretty routine whenever police attend an accident and I think most of the time they expect to issue a producer as the majority of people only carry the convenient photo portion of the licence with them.

Interestingly with all the in car systems in the traf pol cars, they should be able to tell if the car has valid insurance and MOT ... in theory! :D
