2.0 TDI superb - CO2 levels

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

I have a 1.9 TDI 130 Superb Comfort which is a fabulous car and which has very similar levels of CO2 emissions to A4, A3 and Passat with same engine and manual transmission.

However just noticed that the Superb with 2.0 TDI 140 has substantially worse CO2 (173) than equivalent VAG cars with same engine (159 for Passat, for example).

Anyone know why the Superb has such bad CO2 figures with the 2.0TDI 140, when it is almost identical to the Passat when both have the 1.9 TDI130 ??

Or is the CO2 data I found in error ?

I don't know the answer, but would like to know also, and my TDi 140 2.0 is in a higher tax bracket than my former TDi 130 1.9. I know this is down to the Co2 emissions so just registering my curiousity.

Its got to be to do with the Diesel particle Filter I guess & the new Euro 4 emissions. Also you cant run them on Bio Diesel as it clogs the filter.

Ive heard of another Superb breaking down locally due to the DPF.

My advice from an owner of the 140 thats failed once is stick with the 130, its a better car & avoid any car with a DPF until the technology has had a few years to sort itself out

Sounds like the sticking with the old model is a better option all round?!?!

Its a real shame as its a cracking car apart from this one fault. We really want to keep it but are being forced into suing someone because of Skodas attitude or living with it until the warranty runs out & then modding the car.

Seems like a pain in the backside all round then really!!

I've had a look at a 140 PS Superb with the cover off for the first time. It looks like a bodge to me, in that the cylinder head (8 valve) is seemingly identical to the head on my 130 PS AWX engine - they seem to have fitted this head to the 2 litre block. Would anyone in a position to verify the part numbers care to check this?

I have made the point about VAG not wanting to spend money on this obsolete design, but I wonder if putting the "wrong" head on the engine has raised the emissions and degraded the fuel consumption? All of the transverse 2 litre PD installations use a 16 valve head - using the old head in the Superb would have made it a straight swap. Maybe this was just too tempting for VAG as a quick "fix".

It would be interesting to put this 8 valve engine on a test bed and see if it really does make 140 PS as is claimed (for both).

Very interesting points, you are obviously speaking as someone with some knowledge of these things. As to your last point your suspicions I have been led to believe are well founded

I am very interested in the more I am reading about this engine, so please keep posting all you find out.

Stop press: VW chairman now resigned. I wonder if his company Superb failed its emissions test?
