I was recently told that my offside front wheel bearing needs replacing. I was told this at a garage near where my parents live and was quoted

How old is the car. Some have been changed under warranty.

£120 sounds ok though.

It's 6 year old now. The £120 was from an independant garage up north, and the £191 in the south from a skoda dealership. I told them to ram it

The differance will be the Skoda dealer will use genuine parts and have a higher labour rate than the local man.

Not really suprised as there will be a difference in labour rate. Also I doubt the independant wil lhave the correct tooling to do the bearing, this however doesnt mean they wont be able to do it, just means they might struggle a bit.

Are the independant using gen parts? They are close to £100 inc VAT from VAG so they are doing a front bearing for £20????

As mine has just gone as well, at least I now know roughly how much it will cost!

Not suprised the struggled as its not supposed to be done in a press.

So how are you supposed to remove and replace the hub from the housing if not with a press? Does anyone know the torque loading for the funny little nut on the end of the drive shaft? A swift answer would be welcome as I have mine partially stripped.

My OSF wheel bearing is going or gone now... what an irritating noise!

I'm about 93000 miles in my 51 plate Octy vRS so I guess that not too bad...

Well, I've had to do some running about to get my wheel bearing sorted (almost there).

It appears there is a 2 week backorder on bearings, must be a lot of failures at the moment!

Still managed to source one from Jacksons in Basingrad

1J0407613G FRONT WHEEL HUB £62.59+VAT

Off to get it fitted tomorrow.

I had mine done yesterday. They replaced both front wheel bearings and both front wishbones (I needed new bushes and it was cheaper to buy new units than just the bushes). Total cost, all in inc VAT and labour - £411.
