Bits Missing After "Repair" - Is there anything I should worry about?

Featured Replies

Hi There,

I took my Octy 1.8T 4x4 into a local dealer for a diagnostic after the Engine Management Light came on. They are having to order a secondary air pump for it and so I had to drive it away and will take it back next week.

However, this morning I opened the bonnet to add some washer fluid and found that (what I can only describe as) the big black lumpy thing that covers the engine has gone!!! It all looks a bit exposed.

Should I be worried by this and is my car at risk. Should I give the dealership a roasting over this or is it not really an issue.

I was upset to say the least as I have no idea what this cover does, if anything :o

Thanks

Its purely there for cosmetic reasons... but a polite call to the dealer to ask for it back would be in order if I were you.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest.

Just made me a bit

tis just a pretty looking cover, offers no real benefit. i have mine removed now as i cannot remove it with the strut brace fitted so would need to remove the strut brace to check plugs/coil packs etc

Merrits Skoda, Aylesbury once forgot to screw the lid on the coolant reservoir

I now check all caps/lids/covers as soon as I'm home from the dealer.

wouldn't it be a better idea to check before leaving?

Apart from the 'cosmetics', it aids noise reduction, particularly on diesel engines. They do need to put it back dont they!!!

i doubt it makes any difference to the noise on the petrol engines, its only a thin sheet of plastic.

get the dealer to put it back, Stops any odd questions when you come to sell the car on.

Can you not trim your cover so it's removable? surely it would look nicer than no cover... (unless you want it intact for when you sell???). Just a thought....

Mine's off at the moment and I'm sure the engine sounds more rattly when first started.

Seems no different when driving though!

Not hooking your gauges up at last are you rob............?:P

Yes!! I did both last weekend. I now have working oil temp and air/fuel ratio gauges.

It only took me 6 months to get around to it!!

Its only a thin sheet of plastic, but if it cuts the noise down by a few decibels then I don't think it cares what type of engine you have it will still cut the noise by the same amount, it's an inert piece of plastic,;)

and yes you want it back from the dealers that is a sure sign of bad workmanship, I mean it's not like a little washer or cable tie, I mean it's a ruddy huge lump of plastic, what they couldn't see it under the newspaper or something. I would also insist on a free check up by them of every thing done while checking your vehicle the first time after all if they can forget a huge lump of plastic what else they forgot that you can't see.

PLINK

my point plink was that on the diesel engines i think they have some form of sound deadening under the plastic cover that the petrols don't. :)

Plink - that is sound advice regarding their checks. Certainly smacks of poor workmanship to me and I will not be sorry to leave the area and go to a new dealer. :orb_toung

Thanks again for all your help :)
