Split kids milkshake!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Was away camping on the weekend with the kids and one of their milkshakes spilt in the boot. Mopped it up as best I could, but as you can imaging, it now stinks!

Tried to get the boot carpet out but it seems as though the seatbelts are threaded through it and would need to be removed to get the carpet out.

Thinking about calling the stealers tommorrow to see how much it would be to have a new boot carpet fitted unless anyone here has any ideas on how I can get the existing carpet out so I can clean it properly.

Any help/advice appreciated.

Cheers,

Matt

I spent nearly a year of my life testing cleaning products on various foul smelling stains (what a job!), so I reckon I'm pretty well qualified to answer this one....

No need to take the carpet out; if you use a spray-on carpet cleaning product, reckon that that would do the job. From memory, try Rugdoctor odour remover, or a product called Odoureat (dunno where you get it from tho). I can personally vouch for the effectiveness of this on morning after vomit. Nice.

Usual disclaimers apply, and I'm more often wrong than right....

Try bicarbonate of soda first. The odour is from the volatile acids (the acid used in flavouring margarine is the same one which gives vomit its characteristic odour). The bicarb acts as a buffer and destroys the nasty bits. Safe. Then clean as usual. Can be used for vomit, milk etc.

Yup! I'm with the first answer on the Yahoo site linked below, i.e. diluted ammonia (available from hardware stores and some chemists for about a quid).

Dilution about 1:10 water, and don't get your nose anywhere near it, as it is a poisonous gas. Another warning is that it will bring some colour dyes out. (Edit: Bicarb is a safer option if in doubt)

That said, there's nowt better IMO for getting rid of smells from carpets/soft furnishings (assuming leave windows open to get rid of ammonia evaporation during drying process also LOL.)

Another edit: An earlier thread had a poster who suffered some problems from overwetting of seat covers - not good.

Regards

Mo

Hope this isn't bad tidings, but I spilt a Miccy-D's thickshake in the footwell of an old Cortina and never got rid of the smell. It always stank in hot or damp weather.
