Enable Disable hardware WXP SP2

Featured Replies

Got a user in work who wishes to use her wireless interface on her laptop at home. However we currently dont allow the use of it in work.

Is their a way in group policy or any other to allow the user (not got local admin) to be able to enable and disable a hardware device?

Cheers

Erm, i guess you could turn of windows wireless zero config service with a policy, however it's still going to leave the hardware device on.

Unless all your lappys are the same I can't see how TBH, short of her turning the hardware device on and off as appropriate and some trust.

Because my line manager is affriad of change  If it was left to him we'll still be on NT4.

Could be worse.

I know of a government department where important information must br printed and delivered by hand because of security concerns , but they still run windows 95 on their desktops.......

win 95, that is funny.

What about doing the following for wireless:

Set windows to only allow wireless to connect to APs not ad hoc networks and allow a user to have their wireless on or off. Set the policy to stop the zero config service when on the domain.

That would allow the users to have their wireless on , but it would reduce the risks from adhoc networks and random access points being used to steal data.

HTH
