PAS sensor swapped

Featured Replies

back with normal PAS action now.

Was a relatively easy job, one done 99% by my mate. After removing the battery to faced with the top up cap for the PAS, I then removed the front bumper, which exposed the electrics of the PAS pump. Disconnected the angle sensor plug and traced it back to the sensor itself which is kind of screwed into a box at the bottom of the steering column. Obviously, this must be where the yaw angle thing comes into play? Sensor was put in (option of two ways to go in, hence the missed call on Lummox's mobile ;)) and then the wire was traced back to the pump and re-connected.

Probably didn't need to remove the battery, but the airbox really had to be moved to one side to aid tracing the wire back to the pump. :)

Glad to have this sorted before the CZ trip.

Oh, is there any kind of use in terms of exchange, of the old sensor? I've kept it just in case. If anyone can utliise it / whatever, drop me a PM and I'll send it to them.

Thats what you get for having a part on order for a month from your dealer. ;) In the end I got one off a chap on Ebay. One time Ebay has come up trumps for me.

lol, all you need to do is pop out the fog light/trim in the front bumper and pull the wiring back around.

Something in my mind said you needed to remove the battery. f*** knows where that came from - my mind works in mysterious ways sometimes. ;) Still, it's a new bit of work on my car I've never witnessed/done before, so the fabia learning experience continues.

Now he tells me just to take off only the fog light trim ;)

Excellent, feel we have probs helped someone now  good thinking on labeling jase. Shame not many people have the view i do of the engine bay!!

Its not a Yaw angle sensor. Its a steering angle sensor. A yaw sensor is something very different and is only fitted to cars with ESP.

And I take the new sensor you fitted had a metal end on it and not a plastic one.

Which mine is not. :) Thanks for the clarification. Whats the "steering box" technically known as that the sensor is mounted into and secured?

Yeah, it looked totally different with all the metal at the top end of it, which is why I threw you a missed call earlier when I wondered it if mattered which way in it went. Looked very bling compared to all the black plastic on the old one. It would have been my original PAS sensor from 2001, the year of manufacture of the car chassis itself.

The 'steering box' is the steering rack.

And a little clarification

Yaw - The angle on which the vehicle turns about its centre axis

Longitudual - also known as pitch or acceleration - The angle on which the car moves front to rear.

Lateral - The forces/angle that the car moves side to side.

These are all measured along with the steering angle for ESP to work. But steering angle is measured by the sensor behind the steering wheel. The Steering sensor you changed is just for the PAS and is a hall effect sensor that tell the PAS ECU that you are turning the wheel and need assistance.

Ta. If thats a piccie of my car then you've grossly underestimated the black smoke coming out the back. ;)

It was added to represent your car, but not to scale ;)
