worrying strange noise

Featured Replies

I have had my Fabia VRS now for about 6 weeks. Its a 55 plate. I drove it for a couple of weeks and it seemed fine, but then I started to hear a strange sort of whining noise when I was driving in low gears. It comes on and off but was most noticable when I had been driving for a while. I had to go into hospital for 2 weeks and then went on holiday so have only been driving it again for the past week. Anyway this noise is now back with a vengeance, was quite bad on Friday and this morning, it is terrible and sometimes really loud.

It is very hard to describe what it is, bit like a screeching noise, it happens when I give it gas and when I let my foot off the pedal, when its coasting in neutral, and is not affected by braking. I don't think it is connected with the engine. I think it sounds like it is happening with the motion of the wheels turning, could it be the wheels?

Luckily I live near the dealers so let then have a listen this morning and hopefully it will be going in sometime this week to be looked at, although nobody seems to know what it is:confused:

anyone else come across this problem?

It sounds like a slightly different noise, but my 2001 Fabia TDi has recently started making a whining noise at low speeds. It sounds as though the handbrake is rubbing very slightly. It frequently makes the same noise really loudly when reversing.

I'm hoping to get it looked at this week and will let you know the outcome.

it is a possibility that a fault with the egr valve is causinf this.

Agreed. Mate of mine had the same problem with a Passat TDi 130 sport. Took the dealer ages to find it. Very unpleasant noise.

Hubby rang dealer and now they say to run it for a week or so to let it get worse before they will look at it:eek:

Great, only hope it nothing serious, but it has already been happening for about 4 weeks. :(

If it is the EGR then it's not serious.....it wont affect the way a diesel runs that much unlike petrols. It'll just sound horrible.

yes but it could be effect the emmisions, and could lead to premature failiure of the turbo
