TPM addition

Featured Replies

Parents havce an Octy II 2.0 TDI, elegance comming with maxidot.

Anyone know if it is possible to turn TPM on using VAG-COM and if so can you get away without any extra parts or will you need to add a switch. If you do need to add a switch, what does that switch do and anybody have a part number and any fitting help.

Ahaaaaa, thanks!

No I don't think it's possible. There is a switch on the dashboard.

If you do need to add a switch, what does that switch do and anybody have a part number and any fitting help.

The switch sets the pressure to be monitored. You put the desired pressure to your tyres then, using the switch, set that pressure as the default one. Any time pressure changes, you get the warning to check your tyres pressure. That's the way it works, as far as I understood.

Ok so i would need to add a switch if i wanted to add it. Are there any other components that would be needed as I'm assuming all the bulbs etc will be in the dash pod alread.

Stu is that a no full stop or a no you need to add a switch and then turn it on.

I was under the impression that it was all done by monitoring the ABS sensors anyway.

Hi

There are a number of different TPM systems on the market.

By far the best system is one which has electronic pressure sensors built into the back of the wheel valves.

These constantly measure tyre pressure - and transmit it wirelessley to the central TPM ECU on the car.

These are fitted to BMW, Mercs, Renault Laguna etc.

The Skoda system is far more crude.

Basically - as far as I understand it just utilises the signals from the ABS sensors on each wheel.

It just looks at the differential wheel speed - this obviously changes if you have different tyre pressures - as you then get a different rolling circumference e.g. with a flat tyre or one losing air.

I have the system on my vRS - but do not have high hopes for it - compared with the more accurate, expensive system!

Cheers!

I'd like to add it too :) another switch - any ideas ?

I hate seeing blank covers where toys should be:finger:

There would obvously be some connections to be made as well as adding the switch already discussed.

As also already pointed out it is a very crude system which IMHO would not justify the hassle if it were possible.

The skoda system may be crude but it's much more reliable than some of the real time pressure monitoring systems, the Renault system is legendary in it's unreliablilty.

There have been comments about the Skoda system being good for a 4 psi diff.:)

Ok so as a summary anyone got any part numbers for the switches/control modules. I would assume that all the wiring is there as i doubt they would have different wiring.

Once i've worked out if it's doable i might well do it.

As the option is only

Thats what I thought, will have to look into it and see whats what, but the parts can't cost over £50

As the option is only
So you just buy this switch, leave it in the glovebox and hey presto you have TPM - Brilliant!! :P

I just recently removed a 2 inch nail from my rear tire and only found out about it thru TPM.

The TPM system alerted me and i went out to check the car and couldnt find anything wrong with either of the tires, so i went to a gasstation to check the pressure incase the TPM was having a bad day.

Dont know the PSI but i had 1.4bar in my rear tire 5 minutes after it alerted me and im running apox 2.5bar normally. And the nails head was really worn down as if its been in there for a while.

So my verdict on TPM is thats it is a very helpfull thing although a little slow to sense any differance.

It can be surprising how long a nail or whatever can be in a tyre before it causes pressure loss. Some years ago my Volvo developed a slow leak, I took it to the tyre depot to be checked and they found the cause was a 1/4" x 4 inch bolt which must have in the tyre for months as the shaft was worn down to about 3/4 of it's normal thickness where it passed through the tread. The bolt head was nearly worn away. They could have repaired that hole, but the end of the bolt had damaged the sidewall, so new tyre needed, I was pretty amazed at the time.
