Help choosing digital camera

Featured Replies

This is on my shortlist along with the a few of the canon range but they are all

Been around the local shops today.

First stop was my local independent camera specialist, what a waste of time. I told him the sort of thing i was after seeing as my Canon A70 had packed up (which he quoted me £100 to fix:eek: ) Showed him some i had found on the net and asked if he could do something for me but he was rubbish and all he did was slag off internet camera stores also his prices were expensive. The Fuji s5600 was £190 in his store yet it can be bought from Dixons on line for £140 ish

Anyway on to my local Jessops, the store is very small and was packed, didn't have a very good selection in my opinion so i bailed out of there sharpish too.

Went to a retail park about 10 miles from where i live and they had a Jessops, Comet, Currys and a PC world.

Anyway looking around Jessops i found one of these

Sony DSC H5 Review and Where to Find the Best Prices

Now it is way more than i was going to spend but the camera seems to be one of the best you can get.

Jessops staff were very helpfull and the sales assistant was very knowledgable. It was priced at £350

I went away and popped round to my parents to use their PC to see what it was going for on line and Jessops own website had it for £319 so i went back to the store and the matched that price, also got a 1gig Memory stick Duo for £35 and a case for £19

Just charging the batteries up and then i can have a play.

I could have got it a bit cheaper online whcih is what i would usually do but by the time delivery is added on i really couldn't be bothered, and i wanted a new camera like yesterday. Also they are doing by now pay later so i will have the cash in my account instead for a while.

Will post some pics tomorrow if i get chance.

Just as a slight aside are Digital Cameras going to become obsolete for the average snapper?

Reason I say that is I have an oldish Casio Exilim 4 megapixel camera which I used to use a bit but find I get adequate shots with my new SE K800i 3.2 megapixel Camera Phone whihc also has a Xenon Flash and see that Samsung are currently in the process of producing a Phone with a 10 yes ten megapixel camera built in.

Now I always have my phone with me but not the camera.

However, it's not all about pixels - the only reason you'd need so many pixels is so that you can do a digital "zoom" rather than having to figure out how to put a decent lens on a camera. And digital zooms are a poor substitute for optical zooms.

So yes, while someone who would normally buy a disposable camera for taking pictures might well be happy with the output from a phone camera, I suspect that there are a lot of people for whom a proper camera will still hold some benefit...

Rob.

Popped into jessops today to see what they had .....found out about a price match (they will match any online or store price, if it based in the UK)

Had a play with a few cameras ....including canon eos 350 d and 400d ...very nice...very very nice :o ...maybe one day

Good choice on the DSC-H5 I say!

As I said earlier I have the H2 and it's great. The H5 wasn't available when I bought mine.
