Talex Lite Missed GATSO that's been there for years!

Featured Replies

Went over to clarks village in street/glastonbury today (for anyone else who's local so zumerzet) via the A361 so thought I'd take the talex along to see what it picked up.

As I know the road VERY well and have been travelling it regularly for over a decade I'm well aware of all the gatso camera sites etc so wasn't speeding anyway. (Also held up by traffic most of the way anyway!)

On the way there it warned of several "possibles" as usual and correctly picked up the sneakily hidden one round a blind bend in a 30 zone (although the camera was not there, suspect it's been removed temporarily to make it more visible - this has happened to another camera near me recently).

On the way back there is another fixed gatso in othery that's been there for as long as I can remember yet the flipping talex kept completely silent  . (luckily I knew so wasn't exceeding the limit.)

I realise the database may not be totally up to date (purchased a subscription kit when I got home) but it successfully picked up a new red light camera outside clarks village that has definately only recently been installed.

The current database version is 6042, have checked on the site but it only gives a date, not a number.

I've emailed them about this, just wondered if anyone else has any thoughts?

Bit worrying if it doesn't include long standing gatso's - I thought these things were the dogs danglies for spotting the thieving grey boxes!!!

I must say I am starting to get a bit fed up with the numerous 'Warning. Possible mobile camera site ahead' warnings and would much rather have the option to download a database with just the known fixed camera locations.

Have you tried the other mode?

Using it in camera mode at the moment, haven't tried it in normal mode.

I agree that the "possible mobile camera site ahead" warnings are really annoying and I'd rather disable them while I'm driving locally as I know where they park up anyway!

Also I've seen them in one location on the A303 that's not on the DB at present (although only the once) and one of the possibles warned about each day on the drive to work was only used once about two years ago - I think they got a rollocking cos it was parked on some grass pointing at the brow of a hill, seem to remember some hoo ha about some of their locations at the time.

I'm more worried about it not picking up fixed units if I go on a long drive somewhere unfamiliar - it's made me lose a bit of faith in the product really, although I'll keep you all updated if I get a response from them.

Pity there doesn't appear to be any method of notifying them of a new site with the GPS co-ordinates - as far as I'm aware there's no way of displaying your actual position.

haven' tried a talex, but I have an origin B2, and it always picks up the cameras, the database is so well updated, that it has always known about the cameras in temperary roadworks on the motorways too! also picked up us being hit with a laser gun on the cat'n'fiddle meet! lol... (non of us were speeding when hit by the laser...)

also , as far as I know it's the only one that discriminates which side of the road they are on too! so no false alerts....

*note: didn't intend to sound like an advert! but makes me not wanna buy a talex!

edit: they have a button for notifying of a new site, and they get the info when you download the new map 9done on your home PC) then they send out their inspectors to verify it, then update the database..... they give the first person to notify them of a new camera £50 .... so basically every origin b" owner is updating their database all the time.... you can also add your own sites (I do this with poular camera van sites on the A66) ... you can also get your GPS co-ordinates from the menu anytime (for whatever reason you may need?! ) lol...

The talex seems to know which direction you're travelling in - it only notifies twice with one particular gatso that's on a dual carriageway that does get turned both ways, otherwise it's been pretty good!

also picked up us being hit with a laser gun on the cat'n'fiddle meet! lol... (non of us were speeding when hit by the laser...)

Would still like to know where the laser came from  as we were in the middle of nowhere :D

I know, I didn't see any obvious parked vehicals....... someone said there was a focus c-max parked there that had it's rear pointing towards us, but i didn't see anything....

Can't say it's ever given a false laser alert before, but I guess there's a first time for everything!

Helicopter

Didn't see any helicopters during my flight

Back to topic briefly.......................:P .

I had a reply from talex stating that there were two camera's on that stretch (which is correct), said they would check the angles set in the database (presumably to detect direction of travel).

When I get my update kit I'll update it and try driving along there again and see what happens.

And for the people who have origin b2's - yeah I know it's a "superior" bit of kit but I couldn't justify spending the extra couple of hundred for the amount of unfamiliar roads I drive on. .

Also I was more interested in hearing from people who have talex...............:)

I know the talex misses a possible mobiel camera site on southampton avenue that is regularly there. Saying that going down to cornwall this weekend it picked up absolubly loads of the things.

My major Talex gripe would be that the warning needss to be more than 500 yards in advance now the cameras can get you up to 1km away.

Went over to clarks village in street/glastonbury today (for

and correctly picked up the sneakily hidden one round a blind bend in a 30 zone (although the camera was not there, suspect it's been removed temporarily to make it more visible - this has happened to another camera near me recently).

Hi Matt

The missing camera you refer to in East Lyng was set fire to a couple

of months ago and has`nt been replaced yet .... I thought that was rather

brave of someone due to the fact it is right outside of some bungalows....

I have`nt been through Othery with my Talex so not sure if it registers

with mine ...... with regard to East Lyng ........ sometimes there is a plod

with a gun opposite the garage ........... I believe he lives in one of

the houses ....... so working from home so to speak

Hi Pete,

HA Ha Good on 'em for setting fire to it although I wouldn't want to live there when that happened  . (Have had a car on fire outside - not fun!)

It was in a very sneaky position and as you're leaving the village it's hardly there to ensure you don't speed through is it?!

The other camera that got moved was at henlade - it disappeared for about 3 days, no sign of damage, then got replaced stuck out further as it was previously hidden behind the sign at the bottom of the dual carriageway.

Good to know there's another tauntonian on here - wonder if we've passed at all around the town???

The one at henlade was torched as well ........ but it was replaced quickly:(

my daily route in my car is 8am greenway rd to priorswood ind est

rest of the day I`m in my peug van ...... the van has a briskoda sticker

on the back door and the front sunvisor ....... the car has briskoda on windscreen

both rear door windows and on the tailgate glass with a private plate

I see loads of skodas during the day ... but not seen one with a Briskoda sticker yet

its funny but since I became a skoda owner 18 months ago .... its seem like

every tenth car is a skoda .......... ( did`nt notice them before ) :)

  • Author

didn't realise that the henlade one was torched - it was there one morning I went through and gone the next  . Second time for that one then I believe  .

Your morning route must take you past me almost except I usually leave about 7:55 so probably gone before you get to the industrial estate!

I haven't got any brisky stickers in my car but there's a nice red one in the back window that pretty much clearly shows what I think of Tony Blair    . (Got it at the game fair a few years ago, still see people laughing when they spot it in traffic  - probably get in trouble if I show it on here as it definately contravines the posting rules!)

And I know what you mean about the skoda's being everywhere - funny how you notice them once you're an owner, although to be fair before I starting researching the vrs I wouldn't know what the badge meant anyway.........

Matt

To be honest, I think some of you are really splitting hairs on this one.

Yes, we would all like a faultless detection device and a clean license forever, but in reality this aint gonna happen.

My Talex has been impeccible and when I take the occasional trip 'dan sarf' (as the locals there say) it is absolutely spot on.

I go to Preston, Manchester, Liverpool and there's millions of cameras

Fair enough, the 'possible mobile camera site ahead, limit ..... mph' now and again annoys, but on Monday, I was following Stuart (FabVerSe) to the Keswick meet along the A66, he was a couple of cars in front of me (superchipped you see) :D and I had the warning of the 'possible mobile blah blah' and didn't really take heed until everyones brakes lights went on, mine included.

At the end of the day it's 23.59.59, no seriously, the database is really good, not flawless and for the money Talex is excellent value.

I've saved a lot more with the accurate warnings than I paid for it, easily. :)

I agree with you jonny boy, it does seem to be an excellent device.

My only concern (and the point of this thread) was that it missed a fixed (and live) gatso.

The manufacturers have been good on email and I have just updated my talex lite so I will try and test it on the same camera asap and report back if it detects it ok.

The only things I think could be improved on are this: ability to remove "possible warning sites" if required by pressing a combination of buttons (in town for example, no chance of speeding and just plain annoying when I know where they park up and am always watching the speed), and not being able to tell your gps co-ords (which I see is part of the normal talex under "sos positioning" which seems a bit daft to say if I'm stranded in danger somewhere I can't tell the emergency services my location unless I had bought the "full" version??? WTF!).

Also the latter would surely have been helpful to the manufacturers with this particular missed site in that I would've been able to accurately tell them where it was (and any future sites I discover).

Rant over :) .

Update - I just went through othery this afternoon and it picked up the camera this time  .

Whether it has been adjusted in the new database or was just having an off day I'll never know - it also warned of a "possible" site immediately after before it had even finished about the fixed site which meant the final "ding" was after the camera site but apart from that it did it's job.

Any mods listening, feel free to lock this thread now if you like - it's served it's purpose for me now.

Regards,

Matt
