EGR valve woes!

Featured Replies

Hi everone. I hate to make a first post with a problem but I have had the feared engine warning light on my 2001 1.4 16valve furby and the following codes read:

P1564-17972, 16785

P0304-16688.

I've read through the existing posts and am worried about cracked piston rings and that replacing the valve doesn't always solve the problem.

Firstly, how difficult is the valve to remove and clean up? Secondly, if this isn't always the cure, what is?

The engine uses some oil, I've topped it up twice in about 7'000 miles but that doesn't seem too excessive.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! :o

16688 P0304 Cyl.4 Misfire Detected

16785 P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirc.Flow Insufficient Detected

17972 P1564 Idle Speed Contr.Throttle Pos. Low Voltage During Adaptation

Number one and three I wouldnt worry about, number thre can be sorted by adapting the throttle body.

Number two will be your fault. Carbon in the intake system will have blocked up the EGR port under the throttle body. Remove the throttle body and underneath you will see a stem that sticks up into the airflow under the t/b. In the sides of the stem there are two holes. these must be clear of debris for the EGR system to function.

Thanks for the reply, will have a go at the weekend and cross my fingers that it isn't the rings disintergrating thats causing the debris!
