Cambelts

Featured Replies

Well, I've bitten the bullet and booked my car in for a cambelt change. Why bitten the bullet, I hear you ask.

Well, according to the Skoda service schedule, for the AUQ engine in the RS the interval is 120,000 miles

I don't know about you but that does seem a tad long and I've thought long and hard about this. Should I :

A. Stick to the schedule and wait for the bank and subsequently messy warranty claim

OR

B. Get it done early as a precaution, because I really don't want a cambelt to go.

Skoda technical were in chocolate teapot mode when asked about this and what the warranty ramifications were of having it replaced early as a precaution.

What do you think, am I doing the right thing?

Personally Id say get it done! If you need the car to be reliable and you can stand the cost its not worth taking the risk not doing it.

Your car (particularly!) doesnt have a easy life and 120,000 is far too long really - 10-12 years driving for the average person.

Whats the tizz about a warranty claim? I would have thought that getting it done early would make no odds at all?

jon,

i reckon you're doing exactly the right thing and you should go with your gut instinct. although you really use your car to its fullest potential, you always seem to be careful that you don't overdo things that would cause [i:3bc3cef624]major[/i:3bc3cef624] reliability issues, so i think booking it in is pretty sensible. as you know your car so well and how its driven, if you think it should have a cambelt change, then go ahead and do it!

i too can't see what difference it should make to warranty work. i can't see them being on particularly strong ground if they made a fuss because you wanted to change something early!

Assuming the work were carried out by a Skoda dealer with an OEM part, how could they possibly complain? Obviously if your self fitted,

Ah yes but 60K doesnt apply to some of us who bought our cars pre march 2002 we have 3 years unlimited milage.

I possed a very similar question to VW Tech Support UK regarding 30K oil changes (much too high and i dont care what oil it is IMHO) and the cambelt as well and they agreed as long as all work was done by a skoda dealer using genuine vw/skoda parts no warrenty infringments would have been made.

Jon,

How much is it costing? And how much for the slight "bump" you suffered recently?

I hope your car is soon haring around again.
