What is this new traffic monitor thingy...

Featured Replies

...please. Just arrived: black pole with a black box on top (i.e. discreet) measuring about 2 ft down by 1.5 ft across and with nothing showing other than a small red light in the bottom right-hand corner. Two have appeared opposite one another on a 30 mph road where even double decker buses go at 35. I'm thinking they might be "slow down" indicators, but nothing showing except little red light.

might just be measuring devices to see if it would be profitable to install a camera..........

Oh no don't tell me you live in a red light district now

If it's anything like this, it's a TrafficMaster used for monitoring flow of traffic for users with Traffic Master receivers to help identify congestion free routes.

Nah. I just keep a packet of OMO ("Old man out" in the window ;) What is/was OMO BTW? aside from being "Oh Mo". *runs away*

postmanpat, it might be as there was a hairdryer van about a year ago... Will post back with any new info :)

Hi Chris, but no, as we have those all over the place. It's just a "shoe box upended on a pole" and only about 12-15 ft off the ground. The one you show (around here at least) are normally way high and fairly obviously "flow" monitors, if only cos they pop up on early morning telly congestion reports ;) These are something else...

Bus lane cameras?

If they're opposite each other on each side of the road, I'd be tempted to say they're just traffic and speed counters. Not for the sake of trying to catch motorists, but more for finding out the average speed and traffic volumes on that road at different times of the day / week.

We have some similiar looking things near Burnley that are "height" detectors, triggered when a high vehicle passes and display a warning sign further along indicating not to turn into height restricted road.

OMO was a washing powder back in the dark ages (about 1975ish)lol.

On the box thing, might be a monitor to see if traffic lights could be installed?

They seem to use them as traffic calming measures here!!! also buses get priority as lights change for them..

Thanks all for the replies. This sounds most likely as it does get terribly congested. It wasn't particularly congested IMO before they introduced the bus lane and new (big restrictive) roundabout, but these "boxes" are farther up (before the bus lane and roundabout). I'll let you know if they light up with words, or flash etc.

PS: Thanks FOZ1 - always wondered where that came from :)
