i've decided today that my new years project is going to be a hotted up felicia, with a little bit of luck i'll take about a zillion photos and do numerous how-to's etc.......

i've got a pretty good idea of what i want to do, but i'm stilling erring a bit over which engine to use, which would be better... i'm thinking petrol engines only and i dont want to go over 1600cc unless anybody can convince me otherwise

Maybe the 1600 VTEC unit from a Honda CRX? 152bhp as standard I think, which ain't shabby. A bit of tweaking with the timing and perhaps uprated cams etc., exhaust, air intake - might see 170bhp? Should be fairly reliable too although you'll probably need to rev the nuts of it to get any power!

it's got to be a VAG engine methinks...... and you can get 170bhp from a 1.6 felicia on ITB's

Why a Felicia, and not for instance a Rapid?

I've voted 'other'. The 16V polo engine isn't fast enough. I'd go TDi or how about a 1.8T ?

i've allways like felicia's and besides, a rapid or a 110 is so hard to get hold of now unless anybody can enlighten as to where i could get one

i've been having vr6 and 2.0 and 1.8t thoughts going round my head for a while and it seems like too much work to me.....

remember, i'm going to do all this in my garage at home.

at least with a 1400/1600 engine i could retain the original felicia gearbox and drive shafts.

and the engine wont stay standard, it will recieve the hot up treatment along with the rest of the car.....

P.S..... i allready have a lupo gti lump sat on the floor in my garage just itching for a home..... cant decide wether or not it's worth using a "rare as rocking horse ****" engine on a felicia

Use that then and put the cash you'd potentialy spend on getting a different engine towards some other goddies for the car

i allready have an emerald m3dk ecu in the loft somewhere too, al i have to do is make up a wiring loom for it.... simple

I voted for the Lupo engine Tom , should make for a nice stealthy car

by the looks of it, it will need a whole engine mounting bracket welded in to fit the lupo gti engine becuase it's not mounted the same as the the 8v engines

Yep, 1.6 16v all the way. I'd love a Fun with that engine :D

yeah, i've looked at the fun, but they seem to be too expensive for my liking.

I agree.

Just thats all Lummoxs old one needed to finish it off imho.

Skoda favorit with the 1400 8 valve fabia engine hotted up, minimal fitting work Ita the 136 engine witha long stroke crank), super light weight, and none of the negative handling issues from the over heavy front end. The more sleeper style on the outside the better :D.

i have seen the 135 & 136 engines running twin carbs before. and they seem to go alright too. but to be honest i dont really like the idea of using a wet-lined engine for high performance applications, in the past i've had huge problems with wet lined renault engines, i'd much rather use a vw engine for added reliability. the 1.6 aee engine is absolutely bullet proof and will take a great deal of abuse before blowing up.

the weight issues you've highlighted is another aspect worth considering though, but the the difference in handling between the skoda lump and the vw lump probably wont be an issue... i'm going to use a 22mm front arb and i'm going to modify a set of front coilovers from a lupo that i've got kicking around in the garage so that they will fit the felicia, the other thing i'm looking into also, is using the front bearing carriers from a lupo/polo as well which would also give me the the option of using corrado g60 front brakes

The weight issue does make a difference even with rally suspension on the cars, however if you arent right on the limit you might not notice it so much. As for reliability you would have to go a LONG way to find a more reliable engine than the 136. I used to kill ford pintos and crossflows for a passtime, but The skoda engines take real abuse and keep on going. One of the most reliable engines out there.

MY felicia 136 engine has had nothing but oil changed needed in 10 years rallying! Thats making 90hp has led its class with 3 different drivers and been generally driven hard - its shown no problems at all after 10 years of abuse! The only time Ive everhad a problem with these engines is once of a rapid where the coolant was leaking and the thing ran dry and had a head gasket failure (on a 120 engine), and once on favorit I had brought for spares - It had been inflating the coolant system so I knew the head gasket was causing problems, I drove it from brighton to exeter it finally gave up, when I had a chance to check it over I found one of the head bolts had been snapped, the guy I had got it from had been driving it for weeks to work and back at motorway speed like that with it over heating a bit from time to time. These things REALLY hang together.

Its worth asking around any of the guys who have ran these engines for motorsport use and see how they rate them, under the most abusive circumstances going these things keep on going. The only time you get recurring problems is if you have the head of and dont check the liner shims, but the skoda 136 engine is very over engineered, with plenty of spare potential for performance.

Before going to too much effort onthe brakes try adjusting rears and fitting a set of performance pads, either mintex racing or ebc greenstuff, both of which are used with standard brakes on these cars for rally use!

all of what you've said is true, i used to run my lupo on hillclimbs next to a friend who was running a 136 engine..

the trouble with the liner shims is that the are under neath the liner so the complee psiton conrod has to come out each time.

the main reason i like to stick to the vag engines is they are what i've grown up with and i know them inside out, but i may still consider a skoda engine, of course having the aluminium alloy block does make them lighter...

do you know where i can obtain a dcoe type manifold for the skoda engines so i can look at throttle bodies?? which cam manufacturers make cams from these engines?

I'd suggest _not_ the Honda VTEC unit, cos the engine and box are t'other way about compared with just about anything Euro. Mum has a Sickbrick, so I've seen the enginebay and know.

200cc over your limit, but how about a mk2 golf 1.8 16valve running on twin carbs. They are plentyful and cheap as chips. Even cheaper if you could use standard k-jet injection.

More work and not VAG but Mi-16 engines are pretty common, easy to transplant and it'd be nippy...

IIRC it uses Bosch electrics and injection too.

as for braking, i converted my last felicia to rear discs, and i'll be doing the same this time, i will do a how to on it as well

John Shelley of www.Skofast.com is the guy you want to chat to, ignore the fact that his website is out of date. Give the guy a call or a e-mail, and he can sort you out with anything you could want, right up to ex works mechanics rebuilding your car for you down to lense covers :D. He can sort out cams of allsorts of specs, manifolds, suspension etc etc. Just dont mess the guy around he does skoda drivers a huge favour by sourceing stuff in CZ for us that we'd never hear of otherwise. Would be a shame to lose such a usefull guy.
