Tyre Size Question

Featured Replies

Perhaps I'm mistaken but I seem to recall a thread in which someone mentioned running 215s on the standard rims (which are 205mm wide) - how is this possible? Are 'tapered' tyres available or am I just imagining it?

i think some people run 215/40/16 rather than the standard 205/45/16 due to cost/availability.

they should fit ok and even protect the rim a little more... but i stick with the standard 205/45's

cheers matt :)

edited to get the numbers the right way round..

I run 215/40/16 tyres.... work well , pirelli p'nero on the front, goodyear excellence on the back

But surely if the rim is 205mm wide and the tyre is 215mm wide you've got a 10mm gap between rim and tyre??? Or do the tyres in question not fit a 215 rim?

Forgive me for being stupid but surely there's be a 10mm gap between rim and tyre?

no, different tyre sizes will fit the same rim, I believe 215 is the widest, that will safely go on the OE fabia vRS rim, 215/40/16 and 205/45/16 are very similar in rolling radius, so won't really mess up your speedo. :)

not sure how wide the standard vRs rim is, 6.5?? (inches) I'm sure someone will state the facts and figures :)

edit: you would probably be able to run 195/60/16's ect... remember tyre sidewalls are flexible, the 215 is the mm mesurement of the footprint where the tread is, the "bead" that attaches to the rim will move in or out 10 mil with no real issues (5 mill either side) to fit a different wheel ect. the same size wheels are used with different rubber on many cars. the tyre isn't the specific width just because the wheel is 6.5 inches accross ect.... I seem to remember shifty's fabia vRS with his "show" wheels on had really stretched some rubber accross the very wide rims, still went round corners! ;)
