'Urban myth' sparks stereo theft

BBC NEWS | Wales | South East Wales | 'Urban myth' sparks stereo theft

"Police have said 205 cars were hit by car stereo thefts in Cardiff over the weekend - four times the usual number.

Reports showed 95% of them were Ford models. The car firm believe this is in light of an "urban myth" that they can be used to decode digital TV boxes. Police confirmed the rumour but officers have spoken to Ford and the digibox manufacturers who said there was no link."

I heard an urban myth that symphony CD players can be used to decode combination locks on bank vaults. :)

Sssh!! You'll have tealeaves breaking into Skodas up and down the country now!! :(

I was told the same 'myth' by the engineer who was installing a replacement unit into an 03 Ford Mondeo, after the radio was nicked. Thought it explained it as the radio isn't anything special in these cars.

How random is that!

Some people are just weird. How exactly do they think they'll go about decoding a digibox with a radio then? As if there's instructions on how to do it on the bottom of the radio or something

What are they expecting the outcome to be anyway - free TV channels or something??

Steve

Apparently they take the chip out of them and use that somehow, to get free Sky. I asked if he could show me how, but he said he didnt know :(
