Cleaning Turbo System

Featured Replies

Just had my Octy VRS Mk 1 in to get the 17705 replacement pipe fitted and when i got it back the mechanic said that the turbo system could do with a clean as there was a build up of oil.It wasnt a skoda dealer but i ahve been using him for a few years now and know him pretty well and hes well clued up on performance cars(he drives a 300zx) but im just wondering what he suggested is common practice or is he just trying to squeeze a few more precious pounds out me?Cheers for any information

Did he specify where the oil was? The turbo is oil-cooled so there will be oil around the cooling system. There shouldn't be much oil in the air flow part. A tiny amount of oil I would have thought is required just for lubrication. And in anyway, it should be "clean" as it's after the air filter.

Do you have a standard paper air filter or an aftermarket one? If it's aftermarket, it pays not to have it oiled too much, not just because of the turbo but the MAF sensor is quite sensitive (anc costly to replace!)

I do have an aftermarket filter but it is the pipercross panel filter for 1.8T that does not require oiled but from what you have a said it sounds like it is just possibly a build up of oil over the course of the cars life,it is nearly 5 years old.

Depending on how much he is charging you for such a service, i would say get it done if you trust him and it's fairly cheap. Nothing worse that getting the inside of the turbo full of oil that can bake onto it.

Think he said it be a couple of hours labour so ill probably just get it done at some point.Cheers for the info

I dunno what's "normal", but i could see an oil buildup occurring between the PCV feed and the head. Where is the PCV from the rocker cover to the inlet system terminated on a turbo Octy? (guessing at air filter box).
