Just curious: Fog light and Full beam

Featured Replies

Hi,

A friend of mine owns a 106 Gti and whenever he puts his full beam on his fog also comes on. I asked how he did that but apparently it came as std with the gti. and i was like :D This looks a bit funkey..

Just out of curiousity... How would that be wired up? If someone were to do it on the fabia...

Its illegal. IT IS NOT STANDARD!! Fog lights must be wired to a switch so that they can be turned on only if there is reduced visibility. Your mate is telling porkies OR it was done by the previous owner

What's the point? If you're on full beam you are looking into the distance not five feet in front of the car, and anybody coming the other way is blinded by your lights and can't see the car anyway.

My Fiesta used to do this - we re-wired the switch so that a hidden switch could be flicked so the fogs come on with the main beam. It was illegal, but it was only for a road up near us which is really bad, and the main beam were dire.

The switch was removed when the car was sold.

Have you not heard? Fog lights are cool!!

if it's factory fit then surely they would be considered driving lights and not fog lights therefore not illegal :P

it has to be done via a relay that is switched by the main beam loom and turns the fog lights on otherwise if you just link them out it would work in reverse and light the main beam when you put the fogs on.

****!

IIRC, You can leave the fogs on 'some cars' .

For instance, The Focus RS, can have it's Fog lights on 24/7 and I'm sure this is the same with the 106 GTI, As why they turn on standard.

As bengie says, the lights in the bumpers of a 106 Gti are driving lights, not fog lights. They come on to assist full beam. The beam pattern from a driving lamp is different to that of a fog lamp.

You are not allowed to drive around with driving lights on all the time any more than you are with fogs. Some cars have started putting 5w sidelight bulbs in with the fog lights (new galaxy) which can be left on all the time as they are just classed as markers. Despite popular belief, it is in fact illegal for saxo’s to have their fog lights on during broad daylight!

Ahh.. clever.. i suppose that makes more sense..! He does have his fogs/assisted driving lights on alot of the time....

As for people implying its evil and bad.. you would only use full beams when no-one is around. So why not use as much light as possible to give clarity on the roads? Least its better than the people who constantly have their fogs on...

[rant] Drove back home yesterday night on the M20 and this **** of a landrover (the new David Beckem stylie ones) had his rear fogs on and they are STUPIDLY dazzling..! Its people like these provoke road rage... :P [/rant]

VRSPhil: What do you mean difference of a beam pattern between driving lamp and fog lamp? angle of beam?

Thanks for the replies :)

I always thought lights below a certain level, i.e. bumper and below can only be illuminated in poor light, such as fog, so driving lamps at this level would be illegal

But then my first car was a 1966 Mini Traveller and the number of extra lights on the front would flatten the battery anyway!!

If you viewed the beam on the road from above the car, a fog lamp illuminates a wide area but does not project far in front of the car, driving lamps produce a more narrow beam which projects a lot further...

Might not be actually.

Depending on the lenses and adjustment of the beam, if they come on with full beam they would be considered driving lights. If you look at old minis they had a 6 bar on the front with driving lights on them.

I mean it's not like it is going to blind anyone is it, as you would only use them with full beam.

If you're blinded by oncoming headlights, you can't see anything, however "cool" it is!

It used to be the case that driving lights needed to have their centres 18" off the ground, in which case fog lights wouldn't qualify as driving lights.

:) My post was intended to be sarcastic.

IMO, auxilliary lights, regardless of whether you call them fog/driving lights are unnecessary in normal weather conditions. Night time does not constitute adverse weather conditions.

IMHO driving lights were useful on old cars, when headlight techology was not as advanced as it is today.

Valid point.

The peugeot 106 does indeed have driving lights, i do however hate tw@ts with fog lights, they get treated to flashing of my fog lights, horn and full beams

Driving lights are as valid today, especially on cars without Xennon lights, as they were before.

Fog lights on at any time other than when required however are at the very least annoying and sometimes very dangerous.

The law states 24" from the ground for them to be classed as driving lamps. Any less, they are fog lights and must be turned on with a switch and then only in reduced visibility of less than 100 metres.

In case youre arguing about this. This is LAW !!

I hate idiots driving with fog lights on. I see people of all ages drive cars with foggies on in day light and clear weather,I can imagine some just don't know they have them on:eek: ....these people should pay a fine.....they won't "not know again"

Ch4vs in there ch4v mobiles who have fog lights on also should pay a fine, should be publically humiliated and have thier licenses taken off them.

I find land rover dirvers to be the worst offenders

I find land rover dirvers to be the worst offenders

And the worst part about these is the fog lights are a lot higher off the ground than on a normal car and so prove to be very dazzling  Still at least they have their lights on, unlike a couple of cars I saw (somehow!) on my drive home this evening!!!

they all do it as standard if they have them in the bumpers. A mate of mine has one. So it's not illegal, otherwise Peugeot would not have wired it up like that.

I have driving lamps in the grille of my old Ford which are wired into the main beams and fog lamps under the bumper which are wired through the sidelights and a separate switch (with a warning light). I found my lights much improved when I got rid of the 45 watt Tungstens and upgraded to 55 Watt Halogens.
