temporary tyre fix

Featured Replies

morning,

SWMBO has decided to put a screw through one of her tyres and it seems to be going down fairly quickly (it lasts about 4 days from 35psi to 6 psi). Now I have ordered her a new tyre online but I can't see it getting here before Xmas so I wondered if there is anything I can do short term as she needs to use the car quite a bit.

Is it worth getting one of those tyre foam things and do they work. If I get one do I have to take the screw out or will that cause more problems???

help!

Have you taken it to a tyre fitter to see if it's repairable?

Not yet as didn't wanna waste fortunes when i've got a new tyre coming

I've heard that the slime stuff wrecks your rims. Could just be hear-say, though...

Like Chris said, a tyre fitter will usually be able to plug the hole if it's a single screw (up to 3, in fact), but only is as the tyre's not been run flat (in which case the inside of the sidewall will be damaged).

Should only cost a few quid, but your missus might get away with paying nothing, if she tried the "woe is me, a female driver stuck with a flat tyre" bit! :D

PS: What's wrong with the spare - that's what it's there for!?!

tyre repairs are about a tenner , if its repairable

   I couldn't even begin to consider letting my missus drive a car with a dodgy tyre (tyre weld, screw in or whatever) - how would you feel if she crashed it?

Surely you can just fit the spare (if available) or get a new tyre fitted somewhere.

Is it really worth saving a few quid by buying online if she's left without a safe car over xmas?

Sorry, don't mean to sound harsh, just can't believe anyone would want to drive like that.:thumbdwn:

A fix will be possible if it's 20mm or more from the sidewall, but I personaly would use the spare and put the patched one on the spare wheel.

Ok it's a rover 25 that doesn't come with a spare so ther goes that theory.

Fortunately I took it to a tyre place today and they have sorted it, which I thought was strange as it has run flat twice now so thought it wasn't repairable.

Done and only £12

cheers everyone!

Antony

If your tyre isn't slashed at the sidewalls and is a mere hole through the tread, you would have been better off getting it patched instead of spending money on a brand new tyre. It's always best to do that when you have the chance and then change all four tyres at once.

Edit:

Just read your last post....good :D
