Well, people (here) said it wouldnt happen for years, but LG have already announced a DVD player to play both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs

Still no prices available though.

"under US $1,200"

but IIRC, it was an HD-DVD reader and BD burner.

But will be pricey :(

The LG was a dual HD-DVD and Blu-Ray player, with very reduced functionality for both formats. Sadly it looks unlikely to be licenced by the HD-DVD forum due to this lack of functionality so may never see the light of day.

Interesting, Manny.

I'm still to find an HD-DVD drive for PC (ATAPI interface). I could steal one out of the HD-DVD video players you get or an xbox 360 add-on dvd, but then you have to butcher the case if you want to mount it internally IDE so you're better off just using the USB connection.

Likewise, difficult to find a BD player only (the burners are out there, but cost £400+).

As far as movie playback goes, I think the PS3 is by far the cheapest way. I've yet to see a BD drive that's less than £280, whether a burner or not :)

Well I have the Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player and am really impressed with it. Unlike BD where the advanced feature support is optional, eg. No player currently supports BD-J except the PS3, all HD-DVD players have to support all features before the license is granted.

But you'd get better quality with a HD-DVD or BD player in a PC and then use something like Powerdvd ultra.

The problem with the first gen machines is that none of them can output 1080/24p properly :( And I refuse to pay £500+ on a technically limited device :(

Still, HD-DVD players here (standalone home cinema ones) are just over £200. So do I get that or a PS3. Hmm decisions decisions. Reckon it'd be a PS3 as I can or rather hopefully one day  be able to buy the hd-dvd xbox addon drive somewhere
