i took a mates advice on plugging the ethernet cable directly into each of the network cards.... and clciked run typed in \\"name of my pc"\c$ but nowt happend just said it could not find network or something....??

a normal network cable won't work as its meant for a normal network. to connect them directly you would need a cross over cable and make sure they are both on the same network settings other than the ip adress, make the last number 1 digit different :)

or use a hub, might be able to do it with a USB cale but it would probably be slow.

As above, then run the windows network setup.
