2.0 Petrol Poor economy

Featured Replies

I have now done my first full tank in my Octy - W reg 2.0 petrol slxi and it only did 320 miles before the low tank light came on. I drive very economically and of those 320 miles, 100-150 were motorway miles. For a 12 gallon tank that works out at 29 MPG if i get to 350 before filling up. The official combined MPG is 35 and would expect to actually hit 37-38.

The car idles quite lumpy to the extent that the whole car shakes slighty. The 'lumps' are erratic but happen about every second. The EML has been on intermittantly with 'P0172 system too rich on bank 1'. The MAF sensor is 18 months old and the Lambda sensor was supposedly done at MOT when i bought the car 3 weeks ago. I disconnected The MAF sensor to see if that was the culprit but it idled even rougher.

Any ideas of what it could be before i take it in?

Cheers Guys.

try removing and cleaninf the throttle body... it worked wonders on my 2.0 fabia

forgot to mention that the throttle body was replaced 16 months ago so i guess thats still clean?

cheers

Does it use oil?

It only had a service 2 weeks ago so its a bit early to tell. It hasn't used any yet.

I thought i'd done my homework with skodas but after reading this and other VAG forums it seems this could be an expensive car to run. Should i have stuck with japanese?. The Octy drives very well though, i'd rather keep it.

To be fair the 2.0 petrol isnt the pick up the bunch.

Main problems stem from piston rings. Over rich faults are quite often down to oil vapour entering the inlet system and richening the mixture.

I have the same problem with my fabia 2.0. Havind had a new lambda sensor the fuel consumption if very poor.I have had the battery disconnected to re set the ecu and have cleaned the trottle body.Im wondering if there is some kind of re calibration for the idle/throttle body.

Any suggestions much appreciated

Based on my diesel (for comparison of when the fuel light comes on only) you've got 2 to 3 gallons left, so worst case would be 32mpg rather than your 29. 10% under the "official figures" isn't too bad a "real world" consumption for a petrol.
