Noise from rear brakes?

Featured Replies

Hello people, i'm getting a loud grinding noise from the rear brakes when travelling very slowly with the brakes, down hill juctions etc.

Anyone else had this, any ideas for a self fix before i bother the garage?:)

There is a fix, if you do a search.

It is a common problem, best way to get rid of the glazing on rear discs (due to under use) is toi do a bit more heavy braking fro higher speeds...

Does the handbrake work by applying the rear calipers? If so, gentle application of the handbrake whilst moving will help scrub off any glaze or surface corrosion.

Search for 'mooing kit' IIRC.

That does work. Put on handbrake when moving and it rubs off the excess - but you have to put up with an annoying 'you've got your handbrake on, numb nuts' warning beep:rolleyes: :P

AFAIK the mooing kit was only for a noise which was made when reversing the vehicle

i agree with whats been said above , i.e. do some hard braking or slight handbrake use when driving should deglaze/de-rust the rear pads and discs

Cheers guys, i'll give it a try:thumbup:

My vRS suffered from the 'mooing' noise whether going forward or in reverse, and at any speed until the engine drowned it out, but never under braking. I had the same rear brake mod done by dealer as others have had done, and it's cured it.

So, my point is that although not everyones car has same symptoms, the mod seems to work for most.

Check the thickness of the lining on the inner pads, sometimes they wear faster than the outer pads. The outer pad can still have 3 or 4 mm of lining on it when the inner pad is down to the metal backing plate.

My car makes the moaning noise in reverse and intermittently going forwards at low speeds (up to about 30mph). Applying the handbrake gently does get rid of the noise, but it returns when handbrake released. Is the mod expensive? Can it be done at home or is it a garage job?

I had mine done yesterday at the dealer under warranty. They said they fitted some weights to the rear calipers. All I know is now the noise has gone and the handbrake is as fierce as buggery. :)

Do a search for 'mooing brakes' and it'll come up. ;)
