dodgey earth??

Dodgy micro switch in the drivers door. Do a search and you will find......

I had exactly the same problem on my 02 vrs, turned out to be the well known problem of condensation in the driver door getting into a control box plug and rotting all the pins away. guarantee thats your problem, you will pay hundreds to have it done at a garage, if you can find somebody who is a dab hand with a soldering iron and youre prepared to risk damaging it anyway, its usually repairable

New part is £75 from a dealer. DIY fit it, instructions are on here.

I have an old one if anyone wants to play soldering hero.......

New part is

check the connections on the wiring loom also, they to corrode.

Hope this isn't a daft question - but can anything be done to stop this switch thingie in the door from rotting? (like spraying everything in sight with good old WD40).

Mine has had two electric window regulators (passenger & drivers) and a new central convenience unit & loom fitted in the last 7 weeks. It is not even three years old yet!:thumbdwn:

My old Octy (02 reg) hasn't had any issues like the 04.
