Have a look at the optional equipment codes on the vehicle data sticker inside the front cover of your car's Service Schedule (or under the boot carpet). You should see one of the following codes which will tell you the amperage of the alternator fitted.

8GD - 90A

8GL - 120A

8GM - 70A

8GR - 150A

PS, i am gonna check every conceivable connector, wire, joint possible i can get to tomorrow, just for self satisfaction, even stuff like brake light switch and the wiring loom that runs down side of passanger side to feed the rear, ya never know....

even gonna check the door latches that feed the interior light, check the connections there so will have to remember to seal back up properly after removal.

I see that my VRS is fitted with the 90 amp unit. Do the larger types fit straight onto the car and what would be the largest I could fit?

We have an alternator here that I bought to fit on my 1.9SDI... however we later found out that the alternator wasn't the fault... and we kept the alternator as the garage we brought it off would not take it back due to it having been on the car for about a day...

If you do go to buy an alternator please do drop me a private message or an e-mail and I could give you a price... I happen to know they are a somewhat expensive bit.
