Grand Cherokee Gearbox problems

Featured Replies

SWMBOs 2000(w) Grand Cherokee (4.0 petrol) is having a spat at the moment.

Twice today, the (automatic) gearbox changed down in to first, causing the engine to over rev. Both times it did this for about 10s before changing back up to an appropriate gear. The second time, the engine management light (which according to the hand book can also indicate gearbox troubles) came on and stayed on although the car seems to drive fine.

Anybody care to speculate as to what the problem may be (other than expensive!!)?

TIA

Steve

(Thank goodness i renewed the breakdown insurance as the car is 150 miles from home at the mo!)

don't know the vehicle so just guessing here but it could be an electrical problem or a module problem , i.e. something which is controlling what the gearbox is doing , does sound like it may be expensive though

I was reading a car club magazine last night, and find myself wondering. When was the gearbox oil and the TQF last changed? I know nothing about SUVs, but ZF apparently recommend (if you ask them and not a car maker) that you change them every 50_000 miles.

(ok, i'll kick myself but what does tqf stand for?)

I'm not sure about the gearbox oil, that is what our local garage has suggested, but they haven't seen it yet. The car has been regularly serviced, but it's possible this has been missed.

Interestingly enough, the car has 53k on it.....

It's ATF (Auto Transmission Fluid) Should have been changed plenty of times by now,

I am looking at Autodata now, and it needs "Mopar 9602" ATF

The fluid is the cause of alot of autobox problems as it overheats and cooks, forming deposits and loosing it's lubricating qualities.

Check the dipstick for the ATF and make sure there is plenty of it, it is usually pink and smells sweet.

Iv'e stuck up a diagram of where it's data connection is and just a handful of the AT fault codes, theres alot:O
