tappets

Featured Replies

hi guys -

got fabia 1.4 8v ohv and as its done knocking on 70k and performance is getting a bit dull i thought maybe a bit of a tune up would not go amiss - so chats , dose any body know what the valve clearances should be -

thanks for any help

They are hydraulic so no valve clearances so to speak, they are jut pre loaded and dont alter.

Lummox is right, don't touch them, they can be checked by the dealer at 100,000 or so if they are that noisy and they can add shims if the gaps are excessive.

I can't hear mine over the vRS TDi so I don't worry too much.

Hydraulic tappets are known on a lot of cars to gunk up though. The oilways that feed them become slightly blocked and must be flushed out.

May I suggest an oil flush and a switch to a decent fully synthetic oil as these are known to remove more deposits than semi's. You may find over time that they gradually quieten down after this, but oil care is the prime concern when dealing with a noisy top end.
