i want to replace the rather bland black gear nob with something more stylish.

is it an easy job and can the apron surrounding be easily put back.

any comments please.

The **** is part of the gaiter (at least it appears to be) so you will need to change both. I switched my vRS one to a Golf TD "golfball" with a black leather gaiter and contrasting white stitching. It has the same 6 spd pattern and looks nice IMHO, but it was a bit of a fiddle as the bottom of the gaiter fits into a retaining ring that has to be carefully pried off th eold gaiter (it's stapled on!) and then reattached to the new one. Not a big job but a fiddle. BTW, the **** is held onto the shift lever by a crimped metal ring that has to be pried off.
