High Mileage 2003 Mondeo - Any known issues?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

A friend is looking for a new car & is looking at 3yr old Mondeo Zetec's/LX's with high mileage (80K-90K) for about

no cambelt issues as neither the petrol or diesel have them

i would steer clear of high mileage diesels because, except for a few good ones ,they are cr@p , DMF problems , fuel system problems, intercooler pipe splits , EGR valves stick , turbos go sometimes , noisey front alternator belt

petrols seem to be pretty good but EGR valves can go , inlet manifold flaps can break up and cause engine failure (just done one for that fault)

known issues on all saloon/hatch are rear subframe bushes failing , causing bad knocking at the rear , some wheel bearing failures , handbrake cables seize , brake pads stick on slides

Prone to been drive by a certain HPC driver, requiring new tyres, and uprated brakes. A such this leads to a desire for a remap and uprated suspension.

Hi Chris ;)

No idea why I'd need that - sailed past a Focus RS, Audi TT and Clio 182 today  I'd look at facelift models personally as they have a better interior, higher spec and the diesels gained a 6speed box.

Mine has just ticked over 66k with no probs and no squeaks or rattles, and I suspect it gets driven harder than the average Mondeo ;)

 I doubt it. You forgot about the Police....

yeah we get their fooked ones in the workshop aswell

ScoobyChris' car is the exception to the rule ;)

i've changed injectors on cars with as little as 32k miles on , and DMFs go with monotonous regularity:(

Nope they're included :eek::rofl:

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies.

Ric, are you saying that Mondeo's are unreliable cars then? Or no more so than anything else?

Cheers

Darren

If diesel, I have heard moans from taxi drivers about very big bills for replacement clutches. Not sure if true or not. I imagine long term that they will be less reliable than VAG built cars.

i'm not saying there unreliable , i'm just pointing out what you asked for , known faults etc

but i personally wouldn't have a diesel Mondeo especially if it was out of warranty

when the clutch goes its generally because the DMF has gone also , therefore the high price , but there have been quite a few DMFs changed on Octys aswell

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a DMF?

Dual Mass Flywheel

Ah, that rings bells! Cheers for that.

I was speaking to a guy who's a recovery driver at a party on Friday; he said he's seen lots of these (DMF) failures on Mondeos.

Are they just fitted to the diesels or do the petrols suffer as well? (+ has my vRS got one?  )

Cheers for all the info

not seen that, but mine was a 4 speed auto

cambelt will need doing at 60k (hence why ive sold it!)

The Mk3 Mondeo doesn't have a cambelt! My 62.5k major service cost

yes petrol engines have DMFs aswell , they are usually ok though

as has been mentioned above , coil packs can go on the petrols , they are about £50 plus the labour plus diagnostic to clear the MIL/fault code

:)

scoobychris - have you seen the on board computer on the mondeos? it doesnt mention it in the manual, i found it by one of the guys on the mondeosport forum...

basically you do this

1) sit in your mondeo

2) put the key in the ignition

3) hold down the milage/trip button

4) turn the key twice (to setting before turnover) - keep holding that button

5) turn over the iginiton

6) after a couple of seconds, the milage display will go to "test" (you can let go then)

7) keep tapping that button and you will get all sorts of cool things -

bulb checks

ford engine managemnt error codes

DIGITAL speedo mph/kmph (see how far your analogue speedo is out compared to this! youll be surprised)

DIGITAL revs

i sometimes stick the digital speedo on on motorway journeys... just because :)

to turn it off, just turn the car off.

Yeah I stumbled across this on one of the Mondeo forums a few months back and was quite amazed by what stats the car knows about. Didn't realise it had a bulb check either ... might save me getting out of the car to do it then!

Only downside of using it I found is it clears the trip mileage which I use for calculating my mpg :(

Chris

sorry dont think i made myself clear... its the bulbs in the dashboard check...

yep, it does reset the milage counter which is a bit of a pain....

just as a quick note (not that it matters cos its gone in 9 days) but how many miles can you get out of a tank on yours?

ive done 401 before (driving miss daisy style) on motorways..... usually its around the 300 mark though..

Mine has a tuning box on and will return about 450 miles before the fuel light comes on with that mostly being fast A and B roads with a bit of town driving. I don't think that's too bad considering the life it has under my "care" :D:rofl:

Chris

thats excellent.... mines returning an average of about 28mpg.... (can you see why ive switched to the vrs!)

i will say though that the auto box doesnt help and that if you boot it ive seen it sustained at 8mpg!
