Yet another variable service question!

Featured Replies

Oct 2005 Octavia 4x4 1.9 diesel. Purchased new by me.

Handbook code indicated servicing set to variable.

After around 9000 service indicator came on.

Service mileage had counted down exactly in line with miles being put on the car.

I contacted the dealer, Simpsons of Colne, who told me to carry on until +/- 18,000 miles!! Said indicator must have been set incorrectly.

After the 1st service, they assured me it had been set to variable.

Since then it has counted down exactly in line with mileage and now needs servicing after another 18,500 miles. They filled it with long life oil.

So I am still not convinced it is set to variable service!!!

Question: What is the maximum variable service mileage you can get from the 1.9pdi 105hp motor? I tend to do a 40 mile motorway journey twice a day with limited short & stop start runs. I would have thought that was ideal for an extended service regime. Does the fact that I have got to 18,500 miles indicate that I have squeezed out the maximum mileage, or is it still set on some fixed mileage interval?

I would like to know before taking it in for the next service, so i can discuss this with them.

Thanks,

Tony

Min 9300 miles

Max 20000 miles.

You should be able to press the button and it should tell you how many miles and days you have left. Variable will take a while to set itself.

Thanks Lummox,

Well if I've got to 18,500 miles I guess I can't complain!! Only 1500 short of the max. possible.

Thats about the norm for variable.

When I brought my used 1.9TDI 4x4, it had 6,500 miles on the clock with the service indicator estimating the first service was required at 14,500 miles. The previous owner did a lot of town journeys but as I do 63 miles a day on motorways and A roads, it finally decided it needed its first service at 18,000 miles. It obviously depends on how the car is driven - the service indicator is now estimating 18,400 miles before another trip to the garage.

Hi Andrew,

Has it just been serviced then? So the 18,400 is miles to next service, or have you already clocked up a few miles since the service?

I am going to hit 18,500 so I'm not unhappy!

I wonder if they will change the oil in the Haldex clutch this time round as the service book says it should be dropped at 60k Km = +/- 37.5k miles.

Haldex oil is every 40k in the Octavia 2.

Tony,

Car was serviced just before Christmas. I've done approx. 2500 miles since then and the service indicator is saying 16200 miles so I'll also be happy. The service cost more than my old Octy I - £177.74 but I know the long life oil isn't cheap. At least that's better than a mate who had a oil change service on his Jag and got stung £270 !!!

Hi,

I've just bought a 2.0 TDI L&K, its set for variable service (QG1 in the service book). I just checked the service mileage on the maxidot and is saying 8,900 miles ! I've only done 500 miles total and mainly motorway driving, do I need to see my dealer and have the service interval changed. I only ask because the 1.9 TDI Elegance I part ex'd (octy 2) for it was on variable and its first service was at 18,000 miles doing the exact same driving.
