Fabia Wagon 1.4 TDI (80PS) whistling

Featured Replies

Hey...

First of all let me say it is my first diesel car, so im not really familiar with diesel engine sounds :D

My Fabia Wagon 1.4 TDI has approx 7000km now. When decelerating (relase the throttle), i can hear a quiet whistling sound (in 5th gear from 2000 to 1800rpm), in 4th gear approx 200rpm lower i think...

I can hear that sound also when accelerating in 5th gear, but its quieter than in deceleration...

At other RPM i can't hear anything whistling or whining.

So is it something wrong with the transmission (a bearing?) or is it just the sound of the turbo ?!

If i apply the clutch and the RPM drops fast, the sound disappears.

And another thing. When i change from 1st to 2nd gear, sometimes i hear a "clonk", but not very loud. Is it normal ?

Tnx for your replies !!

Noone able to tell me if his/her fabia makes the same noise, so it can be linked to the turbo sound ?!

Regarding the turbo, you will hear the turbo winding up and down as you accelerate and decelerate, it spins at somwhere in the region of 60 to 90,000 Rpm.

My turbo makes whistling noises around this rev range.

The Diesel engine is really a big pump when you remove your foot from the pedal so it will still pull air through to a certain extent.

The sound will go if you depress the clutch as the engine revs will drop fast and it will go to tickover.

It may also depend upon what turbo you have, I have a VTG on the vRS and am not sure what turbo's are put into other vehicles.
