bearing noise on gearbox? some strange spinning noise

Featured Replies

when i start my car and leave it in neutral i can hear the gear box doing something until i press the cluctch in it seems to sound like it slows down and stops spinning... its done it since i've bought it but im curiouse to know what it is!:) any idea?

Clutch release bearing most likely if it goes away when the clutch is pressed.

It's likely to be the gears and other bits slowing down.

The gearbox spins fairly fast even at tickover. The input train will match the engine crankshaft speed so disconnecting the drive will allow this to slow down, bearing in mind if it's rotating a 900Rpm at tickover, thats 15 times a second.

The clutch thrust bearing will only spin when the pedal is depressed to part the clutch plates, you can tell if this is going as its quite a noise, but it should be ok as long as you don't sit with your foot resting on the clutch pedal while driving.

so its nothing wrong its just a normall noise the car makes? its not very loud but just about noticable.:) thanks

hi L-Y-K

sounds like you bought the car second hand - i would change the gearbox oil and see how much comes out and the colour - oil dose weep through the drive shaft seals over time - and fill up with fresh - gearboxes will get noisy if neglected - that might solve your problem -

have luck :)

Its perfectly normal, as Conshine correctly said its the first motion shaft spinning as its rotating when the engine is.
