Apart from the usual ensure the tyre pressure is correct, use decent fuel etc... are there any other tips to increase performance/MPG?

Take out all stuff you don't need, rear seats, spare wheel, engine covers, don't carry any thing in the car you don't need.

Sell it and buy a mid 90's turbo'd jap thing You'd have 8k spare on a new vRS - that's not a bat saving

Don't really want to strip out the car, my 5 month old son won't appreciate it. although I do have a spare alloy to replace my steel spare

The pikey mods Decron mentioned seem more my cup of tea, again any more mods like this?

The alloy will probably be heavier...

The pikey mods are for keeping your SMIC a bit cooler and really make a difference in the summer especially if your remapped. The Pd160 intake and filter isn't a bad mod either as it does allow easier breathing, but you will really only notice this making a difference again when you have a remap, as it will reduce over fuelling and smoke.

Use Millers diesel sport 4. Amazing effect had with my economy.

For £100-£150 on ebay you can get a Dragon tuning box - not a long way from a remap performance-wise (awaits protests!) but you keep your warranty if you take it off when it goes into the garage.

Performance is pretty nice with a dragon (digital) tuning box, if you buy it for the 100-150 price then great, new it is a lot more from them though.

Most generic maps that are cheap will give you about 160-170 range bhp, you can get better ones that are still generic that push it over that. A custom map can get higher still if you want

Tuning box works well, won't increase boost so may have a bit more smoke, but combine it with the venting arch (pikey 1 mod) and it shouldn't be too bad.

Warranty aside though, the insurance cost difference might be the killer
